The Hornets are considering a move for former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong, the Watford Observer understands.

Frimpong is currently unattached after his short-term deal with relegated Barnsley ended.

The Golden Boys are keen to add a defensive midfielder to their squad, along with another attack-minded centre midfielder and a home-grown goalkeeper.

We understand Frimpong, who has a cap for Ghana, is one of several players the club are looking at for the holding role.

The 22-year-old joined Arsenal at the age of nine and made 16 competitive first team appearances for the club.

Frimpong had five outings on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2012 before his season was ended due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which was the second time he had suffered the problem.

The Ghanaian-born player spent the 2012/13 campaign on loan at Charlton Athletic and then Fulham, making six appearances at both clubs.

He joined Barnsley in January on a permanent deal until the end of the season but only made nine outings and didn't feature in the final month of the campaign. Frimpong was sent off on his Barnsley debut for two yellow cards and received an additional four in his nine run-outs for the club.

Frimpong is no better than the players we already have........but maybe a good squad addition?

Remember, there must be at least NINE British qualified players in the match day squad this season. We ran it close with SIX on several occasions last season, so we need to add more Brits and less foreigners from now on.

But, In the Pozzos we trust!

Bristol Hornet, I know this was a proposal for the meeting of the football League clubs in June, but I have seen no reports that is was adopted. Not sure this is so. I believe it is still 6 not 9.

Even so Frimpong is homegrown regardless of nationality as he has been at Arsenal since he was a child, he would qualify as 'homegrown'.

Having said that I agree, I am not sure given the way his career petered out at Arsenal and his poor performances at Barnsley that he is the answer - though he would be second choice behind Tozser anyway.

However, he can't be that bad if at Arsenal, where he had been compared to Alex Song and Michael Essien. Evryone deserves a second chance, but I am uncertain.

Absolutely NO, NO, NO....and No again!

For all the comments there have been on Diakite, and I have to say, I was very negative towards him, I think with a pre season behind him and a sense of belonging from the club, he could do a job for us as a holding midfielder. When he came on as a sub v Huddersfield, he was the only one who showed any fight, power or desire. If we could harness that on a regular basis, he would be a valuable member of the squad

Bracing myself for negative feedback, but what the hell. He would certainly be better than Frimpong, that's for sure!

I certainly think Diakite would be a far far better option than this clown.

Merkle down to Beppe imo, when sent off. Should have come off after 60mins. Knackered. 6 months out, new to the Championship and its speed and physicality. Diakte knew English footie - reckless rather than exhausted. No comparison. Frimpong - absolutely not sure, but then again wasn't sure about Gavin Mahon or John Eustace when they arrived. John was slated when he signed and now, his departure is given as a reason for our failure last term.

The lad is 22, so may be, just may be he can offer us something. Jury out for me.

Are you serious? Palacios proved himself as a disgrace throughout last season and at the World Cup. Frimpong has had personal and injury problems hence his career stalling. He will not be a starting 11 player for us. He is not the answer going forward. But he might well be a good back up player who fits the 'homegrown rule'. Argument of him not being better than Connor Smith is fair but it allows us to send him out on loan, without his replacement costing us money....

Well 15 minutes of lunch time research tells me this is one huge gamble.

He has suffered two ACL tears, keeping him out for periods of 9 months and 6 months.

Full début for Gunners against Liverpool - August 2011 - Sent off.
Début for Barnsley he was also sent off.
42 Appearances, nil goals.

Summary therefore, he has got some talent, as you don't stay at Arsenal or get promoted through to the first team without. Does he have the talent for the Horns - Yes.
However, he clearly is as mad as a cat of bonfire night, get that right, and we may have a steal.
Worth 700K in wages though...... not sure.

Agreed, we need a King or an Andrews type, a tough pro that knows the league and doesn't spend the last 10 minutes before going out onto the pitch checking if he's got the correct amount of zig zags shaved into his haircut.
What we've learned from last season is that talent alone doesn't get results in this league. Burnley had a team with hardly any talent at all and finished like 25 points ahead of us. Back in the 80's we had a player called Les Taylor who could hardly trap a bag of cement, but he protected the back 4 like a guard dog, and that's what you need

His goal output is good for a midfielder aswell.
