The opening game of the season saw Watford beat Sheffield United 2-1 at Vicarage Road, thus inflicting Blades boss Dave Bassett's first defeat at the ground as a visiting manager at the seventh time of asking.
Most memorable amongst the goals was an unlikely scissor-kick from defensive midfielder Derek Payne, his only strike for the Hornets.
