Graham Taylor's first competitive game in charge of Watford came in the first leg of a first round League Cup tie with Reading at Vicarage Road.

Two Keith Mercer goals gave the Hornets a 2-1 victory but their progress was only secured after a replay, the tie level after the second leg.

This game also saw Watford debuts for Ian Bolton and Sam Ellis.

I think this was the only time we beat the same side 4 times in a season.

Within a few months Watford had 40 points and the 2nd placed team had 29!

Elton John's Taylor made army was on the march.

Was also my first game as a WFC ball boy. Got to see all the home games for free and close up that season. Only 4 of us turned up one week and I had to patrol the whole of the Shrodell's side including the dog track! Moved faster than the linesman!
