Several Hornets players impressed during Watford’s 3-0 victory against Bolton Wanderers yesterday. Juan Carlos Paredes was named the sponsor’s man-of-the-match but do you agree?

The Ecuador international hadn’t featured for the Golden Boys during pre-season as his move hadn’t received international clearance.

That happened this week and he was thrown straight into the starting XI. The 27-year-old was lively throughout the contest. He caused the Trotters defence problems and struck the bar in the second period.

Troy Deeney produced a captain’s display and opened the scoring with a neat finish while Matej Vydra’s second 'debut' saw him grab a goal.

Lewis McGugan’s work-rate in midfield helped Watford assert their dominance while Daniel Tozer’s passing from deep and Almen Abdi’s creativity played key roles in the Hornets' victory at Vicarage Road.

With only five options on our ballot system, we have chosen four players and other. Vote below and let us know who you've selected in the comments section.

There were some great performances from all over the pitch yesterday. However, one man stood out for me by a country mile and that was Juan Carlos Paredes. Every aspect about his play was pleasing. He can tackle, hold up the ball, pass accurately, dribble and shoot. What more could you ask for? Haven't seen such a quality player since John Barnes. This promises to be one hell of a season. Bring on the Canaries!

An excellent team performance. Great start to the season but let's not get carried away: one down, only 45 to go! Paredes was outstanding; Gomes excellent. We looked great going forward. The defence continues to have difficulty with set-pieces. We still need a physically dominant centre-back.

Not being there yesterday, I can read all this with a smile on my face. The Equadorian I chatted to a while back convinced me Paredes would love the championship, and would be great in an attacking role too. Nice to see he was impressive on his debut.

One game, three points. But how would you shut this team down when there are so many match winners?? Awesome. More of the same in east Anglia please...

Personally I'd prefer to see Angella where he was yesterday. This allows him to get forward more and pick the passes. He proved yesterday that his passing ability is a great asset, particularly with the pace we have up front. Stick him in the middle and you restrict his movement, and if Ekstrands on the left, well, his distribution is not a patch on Angella's. I do agree that we need a 'Fitz Hall' type player in the middle. A no nonsense brute who you can rely on, and have confidence in, when defending set pieces and when defending against physical centre forwards. I do think we'll struggle when we come up against players like Kenwyne Jones.
Anyway what a great start to the season. Great atmosphere, a couple of new crowd favourites born, in Paredes and Gomes ( absolutely LOVED his celebrations in front of the rookery when we scored), great to have Vydra back and oh how I do enjoy bellowing Super Matej Vydra at the top of my voice - I've missed it,I think it's up there with "Eieieio... We've got Marlon King", and "Heider, Heidar etc Helguson" with the loudest songs heard at The Vic in the last 15 years or so.
Positive start to the season and great to see Fessi score too. Footballs back, love it!!

Put things in perspective. A great display but Comez made two great and one excellent saves and commanded the box. Without Gomez pehaps not such a comfortable last quarter of the game. We should have scored more than just 3 goals. Norwich will be tough. Went there many times but not on the end of a good result.

the average football fan will vote Juan Carlos Paredes as man of the match however the more clued up person will tell you Gomes was by far man of the match. Paredes had a very good game and done very well on his debut but did he score or assist on the important goals we scored ?? He had a good shot that hit the bar and made some very good crosses. Gomes made 2 goal bound saves and was talking to the defence constantly giving orders. His distribution apart from one time was excellent and Joel ekstrand said on the radio afterwards he makes a massive diiference know he is behind them. Made saves when they mattered and also celebrated with the fans on the 3rd goal as if he was a fan. Brilliant display.

Tőzsér needs a mention, Abdi too. Actually to be fair I think it's 9's all round.

They've not much up top but Bolton's defence will hardly be breached this season and we've just made them look complete mugs. The signs are all good but such high energy performances come at a cost because we will have to rotate on a regular basis to keep hem up, none of this 'you don't change a winning team' nonsense.

Get ready for big bids for our new star player btw, the scouts are all booking their seats at Carrow Road.

Seemed to be working harder but doesn't always have the speed of thought of some of the others, likes a lot of touches and things slow down a bit when he's on the ball. Certainly improved from last season but more a squad player than a nailed on starter for me.

the average football fan will vote Juan Carlos Paredes as man of the match however the more clued up person will tell you Gomes was by far man of the match. Brilliant display.

the more clued up person will say it was a great team performance. However when you score three goals and could have had more so by definition an outfield player is man of the match
incorrect , gomes made important saves at 2-0 up , Bolton were on top at the time and if they had got one I feel momentum would have carried them onto an onslaught , yes we may have got the breakaway but after last season we don't want to concede goals and put pressure on ourselves in the very first game. There is normally a man of match even when the team plays well.

Angella was my man of the match, he set up all three goals with magnificent passes and was assured in defence.

Great player
Toszer set up the second goal.
Fair enough id had a few down mangans by the time of kick off..

Well ok he looked very good and set up two goals with top draw passes
Two out of three aint bad, as meatloaf used to sing.

Angella is a quality defender, and I would like to see him in the middle of the three at the back, and not Ekstrand.
I agree with you I would like to see Hoban on the left, Angella in the middle and Tamas on the right of the centre backs.
Bang on. Angella was moved to the left to allow him to step out of defence. However, I thought his distribution was quite poor on Saturday. Two great balls for two of the goals but he also played quite a few directly into the feet of the opposing winger - these could have been costly but we got away with it.

sorry, disagree. Valid point that what Gomes did was key to our victory being so comfortable but to get player of the match you need to excel and be involved right through the game, which Paredes did. Gomes did make one great save but you cannot base MOM on one incident alone otherwise the only candidates would be Gomes, Deeney, Vydra (not FF because you would argue the 3rd goal wasnt key).

I did say he'd improved but I am also aware that I have been quick to criticise him. The thing is you tend to see what you want to in a player. I look out for his mistakes so will always veer to the negative. It works the other way as well. Some people think Angella can do no wrong and rated his passing as perfect, conveniently forgetting that prior to the first goal his passing was awful.
