A crowd of less than 6,000 was present to watch the Hornets open the season with a 2-0 defeat to Barnsley.
This was Glenn Roeder's first home game in charge. Bruce Dyer was dismissed on his full debut, with the Watford Observer commenting that "considerable doubt existed as to whether it was a free kick".
Watford's other debut was awarded to new mascot Harry the Hornet, who was chastised for his reaction to Dyer's dismissal.
