Tommie Hoban believes Watford’s incredible strength in depth means they could name two different line-ups capable of competing in the Championship.

Hoban says the impressive competition for places does leave players disappointed but accepts it is “part of the job”.

The 20-year-old is a superb talent but has been limited to one Championship start and one League Cup outing this season due to the selection of the more experienced Gabriele Angella, Joel Ekstrand and Gabriel Tamas.

The Watford dressing room isn’t a happy one currently and head coach Beppe Sannino is under pressure as a number of senior players are disgruntled with the Italian (see back Page).

One of those, Lloyd Dyer, publicly vented his dissatisfaction on Tuesday night during the Golden Boys’ 2-0 win against Rotherham United.

The winger was named on the bench but came on and opened the scoring. He celebrated by running halfway across the pitch and angrily shouting at Sannino.

It was an incident that overshadowed the victory, which was achieved after Sannino had made five changes to the side which had lost to Norwich City on Saturday.

Hoban was one of those players who came into the team and he was asked after the game whether players were unhappy with a lack of match time.

He said: “Everyone wants to be playing week-in, week-out but everyone knows there is a lot of competition this year and people will be disappointed if they’re not starting.

“Everyone is professional though, and everyone is training hard in the week to get a chance. Tonight the manager changed it up and gave other players a chance to go out with fresh legs.

“It can be disappointing when you train hard and do not make the starting XI but you have to deal with that, it’s part of the job.

“When you are called upon you have to do your best for the team.”

Hoban was deployed at left-back against the Millers, a position he admits he has barely played in during his career.

Despite the unfamiliar role, the Academy graduate produced a man-of-the-match display.

When asked if he and the other players who came into the side had a point to prove to Sannino, Hoban replied: “Yes, but I think that is always the case. The squad we have this year is unbelievable and I think we have two starting XIs that could play in the Championship in my opinion.

“There is a lot of competition but it’s good the manager gave us a chance tonight and to come away with three points is very good for us all.”

Sannino’s aggressive manner around Watford’s training ground is understood to have upset a number of the Hornets’ senior professionals. They are also unhappy with how he communicates with the squad. When asked about the morale in the Hornets’ dressing room, Hoban said: “Everyone was a bit disappointed after Saturday. After a good start against Bolton and Stevenage, to lose like we did at Norwich was a bit disappointing.

“The last couple of days, we were maybe a bit down but from yesterday onwards everyone has forgotten about it and have been getting up for this match.

“A good win like this will help everyone and the morale in the dressing room will be back up again.”
