Dave Hockaday believed the Watford bench were getting “very frustrated and animated” prior to Giuseppe Bellusci’s red card and Troy Deeney’s penalty which turned the game in the Hornets favour in their 4-1 victory at Vicarage Road this afternoon.

The teams were locked at 1-1 in the 56th minute after Gabriel Tamas’ own goal had cancelled out Fernando Forestieri’s opener when the Italian debutant brought down the Hornets scorer in the penalty area and was sent off by referee James Linington for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Deeney confidently dispatched the resultant spot-kick and Forestieri and Daniel Tozser went on to add to Watford’s tally before Sam Byram became the second Leeds player to be dismissed in injury time.

Asked what the turning point in the game was, the former Hornets coach replied: “Whatever minute the penalty was correctly awarded, and probably a few seconds before that with the decision to kick it with the outside of the foot.

“Up until then I thought we looked very, very comfortable. I thought we were passing the ball well, frustrating them, they were getting very frustrated and animated on their bench, they were changing things. I thought we came here and done a very, very good job and playing some decent stuff which I’m very, very happy with.”

Asked if Bellusci had to ‘carry the can’ for the defeat, Hockaday replied: “Yes, he knows that. I’ve told him in no uncertain terms, he’s apologised to the team for what it’s worth but it’s something I can’t legislate for with regards to the coaching.

"The players are taking on board the way we want to play, I think everyone can see that. We’re trying to turn this big ship around which is going to take time but moments like that don’t help.”

Turning to how his side responded after conceding the penalty, Hockaday said: "Goals change games, the momentum swings, we're a man down, we're 2-1 down, so the big thing then is to stop that momentum and just kill the game and stay in the game because the longer it stays 2-1 we can then change things with five, ten, 15 minutes to go and you never know, you might get something. So that was the idea.

"Bringing Billy Sharp off was tactical. He's come in from Southampton, he's put in a few shifts of late, half a dozen of the players the previous game had had a bug so we were mindful of that. Antenucci, fresh legs, went to 4-4-1 and just tried to contain it and stop them scoring again. But the lad's [Forestieri's] gone by about five other players and I'm not sure how it went in but it did. At 3-1 the game is gone."

I don't think we ever looked uncomfortable...

Maybe Leeds had a good 5 minutes shortly after they scored, but other than that they did very very little... The question was really only whether we'd convert one of our chances, rather than worrying about conceding again... Leeds were very poor overall, and I don't think Watford ever really had to break a sweat.

I suggest you worry about your own team and your impending p45.
one has to laugh that this man who has the time to pass such
pathetic comments when he laughingly has his present dire role.

Bring in Malky, would be ideal for that lot.

I'm glad you were very very happy and very very comfortable having had not 1 clear cut chance in the first half other than the OG. and only 1 chance in the second half.
Managers can keep saying how they matched us until we scored and then I am very very happy to take the points.

Comfortable? You're deluded Dave. I thought Leeds looked ok at times. But not for sustained periods. Can see them doing alright against a weaker outfit but we were too good for them. You could see a few of their players looked visibly relieved when the unplayable Fessi was subbed. I would hate to have him play against us. Keep him happy and keep him ours.

Leeds had a good spell after the o.g. We got it right in the end and played some really good stuff. Leeds were like the Leeds of old. Nasty and bad tempered. I wish Hockaday well as he was a former Watford bloke but there is no room for sentiment in this game. I bet the fans wish at Leeds that they had the likes of the Pozzo family rather than the basket case that they have as an owner. The only one good thing I would say about Leeds is that they have true support, provided they behave themselves.

Great to hear from the Leeds manager. Come on Watford Observer let's have some quotes from the Watford manager. What's that Frank? Has he stopped talking to you? How does a journalist write the article if the club won't speak to him? Come on Frank, just make it up as you go along........

Of course he refused to comment on player power comments, so the Wobby probably won't bother to print the rest.

Don't know what game Hockaday was watching,Leeds only attempt on goal was from Tamas (100% goals to attempts ratio is good but not with 1 shot all game) Watford totally in control for all bar 5 minutes after Tamas scored. Still think there's a lot more to come from the Hornets,Leeds? I think a relegation scrap ensues...COYHs
