Popular Watford midfielder Cristian Battocchio is on the verge of completing a loan move to Serie B side Virtus Entella.

Battocchio is hugely popular among supporters, players and staff at Watford but has not been included in a single Hornets squad this season, following the arrivals of Keith Andrews and Gianni Munari and the return to full fitness of Almen Abdi.

The likeable 22-year-old made 66 appearances for Watford during his first two years at the club, 43 of which were starts.

Battocchio has been linked with a move to Virtus Entella all summer and he was pictured at the club’s 1-0 defeat to Varese on Saturday.

The energetic midfielder has today posted a message on micro-blogging website Twitter saying:

He also included a video with some of his goals which ended with the message: “Thank you very much to every Watford fan and to my team-mates. Thanks.”

Battocchio joined the Golden Boys on loan from sister club Udinese in 2012 and made 16 starts and nine substitute outings during his first year in Hertfordshire, scoring twice.

He will always be remembered by many fans as the scorer of one of the club’s finest team goals, after he finished off a superb move during the 4-0 victory over Huddersfield Town in January 2013.

Battocchio’s importance increased during his second season at Watford, with Abdi out for most of the campaign. The Argentine-born Italy Under-21 international made 41 appearances, which included 27 starts and five goals.

The midfielder impressed during pre-season this summer but has been omitted from every squad.

Battocchio is expected to join Virtus Entella on a season-long loan but there has been no confirmation from either club.

I for one will miss Battochio. He displayed great enthusiasm on the pitch and affection for the club and fans off the pitch. He gave his all and scored some cracking goals. Is Munari a better option? We will just have to wait and see.

Have the feeling there will be some more outward bound loans to ease pressure on the salary bill.

Let's hope it is just a loan. Only scored GREAT goals and a naturally gifted player. I'm guessing he wants guaranteed football which we just can't offer him. Still think he would have played a part in what will be a long season but hopefully we'll see him back at The Vic in the future.
Sad to see him go - one of those many players we have that are probably more suited to the Premiership game than the rough and tumble of the championship. Cheers Batto.

Guaranteed playing time I'd imagine (hope).

If he were loaned to a Serie A side he'll probably be in the same boat as he is here - on the bench or not even in the squad.

Sensible all round.

Come back soon Batty!

I think the fact that he hasn't even been included in a single matchday squad this season suggests Beppe had a large say in matters. Probably something along the lines of, 'I have Andrews and Munari who can muscle people off the ball now, so I don't need Battocchio anymore'. Perhaps this is what he meant when he called him a 'little, big man' the other day. A big player, but too small in size for his tastes.

There's been talk of Battochio leaving for a couple of weeks. This alone could be the reason he has been left out of the squads if a move had been agreed in principle but the t's and c's were still being thrashed out. It's Not definitely down to him being down the pecking order in Beppe's mind, but having said that you might be right. Munaris physical presence will be a big positive in this league and if Andrews is our new Eustace then CB is probably behind him and 6th/ 7th in the pecking order. Ridiculous squad depth!!!

Oh lockerbiehornet , You would cream your tarten pants if you knew half the stuff I did , Id inform you of a lot more but I select what I want to say and to whom. Do you know things in football happen at pace sometimes ie players about to sign everyone thinking its a done deal then the phone rings and it's all off........Managers scream and shout and tell the owner to stick his job followed by cooling down and sensible chat , did you know the Italians like to shout loudly at eachother sometimes for no other reason than talking ?? You sit at your fireside in your see you jimmy hat stroking your sporran searching the internet for anything about the horns , Not everything gets reported and even Frank Smith has to tone down somethings that he knows. Don't just sit there and dismiss what people know and don't know. Battochio wants to play 1st team football as he is highly thought of in Italy and their under 21s , he cant be guaranteed a place here or in seria a so he is happy to drop a league there to get regular football. He is owned by us and wont go cheap if they decide to sell him as udinese really like him too. You and others on here follow like sheep and shout we have too many players........squad is too big......One leaves and its OMG why they getting rid of him......Sannino don't know what he is doing !!!! Well I can tell you Sannino has no choice in that as the players and his agent and Nani would have been sorting all this out. I will start this off with a minus 1 to keep you happy.

Shame really as he's a cracking little player that gave 100% but sadly it was always going to be the case!
At least it's a loan as I think he will be really good in a couple of years, at the moment he does tend to get muscled out of games.
I'm sure he won't be the only one that will be loaned out or even sold over the next week?
Renege and Murray may even go out on loan still and McGugan may be sold?

I find the bit about sporran scratching hilarious especially as I was born less then 10 miles from the ground, however I guess it's about your level really, and as for searching the internet for info, you really are scrapping the barrel there, having almost 10 years at the WO, working with people such as Kev Affleck, Ollie, PWL and Anthony Matthews I've got plenty of sources of info, IF I needed it. Difference is, I don't give it Charlie big spuds telling the world about what I do and don't know. Silly, little boy

I don't actually remember saying I knew anything,(I 'll leave that to those that reckon they do) I just implemented that IF I needed info I had somewhere to go, I appreciate that reading is a weak spot for some, still back to school in a couple of weeks, time to sharpen those reading skills up! Email any of the mentioned people if you don't believe me, oh and nowhere did I say I worked in editorial, your lack of attention to detail is so obvious though

Ode to Bristol Hornet
Bristol Hornet was once very hairy,
He had a gender change, he then became Mary,
He still had to use Immac, his friends became wary,
He even tried hormones, but then she was scary.

Bristol left Watford under a cloud,
He didn’t have a beard unlike the turin shroud,
His knockers were large of which she was proud,
He was a lady and tried for Girls Aloud.

And so ends this tail, which is really quite deep,
Bristol’s beard did grow while she was asleep,
She woke in the morning and then she did weep,
For next to her was I LoveBas who was a tranny creep.

I thank you
HC

Let's hope it is just a loan. Only scored GREAT goals and a naturally gifted player. I'm guessing he wants guaranteed football which we just can't offer him. Still think he would have played a part in what will be a long season but hopefully we'll see him back at The Vic in the future.
Sad to see him go - one of those many players we have that are probably more suited to the Premiership game than the rough and tumble of the championship. Cheers Batto.
Hopefully that is the reason he has gone out on loan but his message
Sounds like goodbye and not ciao
I believe you are right in saying he would be better suited to the Premiership
Every likelihood others will leave or go out on loan
Don't be surprised if those are dissenting voices

Nobody can doubt his enthusiasm and affection for the club but he is really at his best when we are totally in control of the game so in a tough Championship season it is hard to see him getting too much game time. I agree if we were to get into the Premiership then he might have more opportunity where there is often the opportunity to have more time on the ball.

I thank you
HC
I think this is your best one so far! Whatever you've been taking....can I have some?

I did too see sannino and Gino on the pitch discussing something. I couldn't hear arguing as I was too far away but from the body language it looked as though Gino was angry that sannino had stolen his last slice of pizza.

Dispicable!

yes sorry to see him go,I see this as bringing in the more physical style of player who is 6ft plus and can provide more steel to the team,
that is the way the Championship is played and we need to be properly
equipped for the season.
