Osvaldo Ardiles' Tottenham Hotspur side were the visitors in the League Cup.

Watford exposed defensive frailties when Tommy Mooney squared for Craig Ramage to give the home side an early lead, but a fierce shot from Darren Anderton and an irresistable hat-trick from Jurgen Klinsmann gave Spurs a 4-1 lead at half-time.

Each side added two goals in a much-improved second half from the Hornets, who also won a penalty; Ian Walker saved from Gary Porter after having escaped a red card for tripping Jamie Moralee.

The game finished 6-3; the return leg, which finished 3-2 to the Hornets, was scarcely less open, presenting ample opportunities for the Hornets to win the tie.
