Having topped the first division a fortnight earlier, the Hornets raised eyebrows further by recording their highest league victory with an exhilerating 8-0 demolition of Sunderland.
Luther Blissett was to record his long-awaited first hat-trick, scoring four of the goals, whilst Ross Jenkins and Nigel Callaghan added two apiece.
Watford hit the woodwork a further four times, and visiting goalkeeper Chris Turner pulled off a string of saves to keep the score down.
Beleaguered Sunderland manager Alan Durban was famously quoted after the game as saying: "Get me a video of that. It was brilliant."
