So Watford offer the second cheapest day out in the Championship according to BBC Sport’s Price of Football 2014 Study, but if you’re unable to attend the home match against Millwall then you may miss out.

The findings state the cheapest adult ticket available at Vicarage Road is £14. That is true but here is where the Hornets have been shrewd with their numbers.

The £14 adult ticket is only currently available for the ‘Remembrance match-day’ against the Lions on Saturday, November 1.

For that match-day fans can purchase a ticket, programme, pie and tea for £21.90. Very reasonable, particularly as the club hope to offer a similarly priced ticket at other points in the season.

However, usually the lowest priced adult ticket Watford offer is £26. If that figure was included then the Golden Boys’ cheapest match-day ticket would be the most expensive in the Championship, according to the BBC study. Not so reasonable.

We were sent the BBC figures on Monday night. However, we noticed a mistake upon inspection the following morning. The cheapest adult individual Watford season ticket was listed as costing £165.

The BBC criteria stated prices were based on an adult buying an individual ticket but a quick glance at the club’s website revealed the £165 price was only available if you purchased another adult and child season ticket in the Vicarage Road Stand.

A call and email to the BBC followed. They said their research was conducted with club press officers and they were reliant on being told the correct figures.

So, in effect, clubs can manipulate the stats in their favour - or misunderstand the specification - very easily.

While the resources were not available to double check with every Championship club, we were able to check with the Hornets and they confirmed the £165 figure was incorrect based on the BBC’s criteria.

The cheapest individual adult season ticket at Watford in fact costs £366, slightly above the Championship average of £347.20 based on the BBC study.

So let’s rattle through a few quick stats. Watford’s £3 programme is in line with the majority of Championship sides but the cost of a pie (£3.30) is the eighth highest in the division. But the Golden Boys do offer the second cheapest tea in the league at £1.60.

Away from Vicarage Road, adult supporters who buy a home or away shirt are paying the joint third lowest price (£40) for their replica top.

Norwich City supporters have to pay the most for their season ticket in the Championship. The cheapest season ticket at Carrow Road costs £499.50.

Charlton Athletic supporters are getting the best deal in the Football League to watch their side throughout the campaign, with £150 securing some Addicks fans their place at the Valley for a year.

The most expensive Championship match-day ticket can be found at Fulham (£45) while Wigan’s most expensive ticket is £27, the lowest in the division.

Watford’s most expensive match-day ticket is £31, the sixth lowest in the league.

When comparing prices for sides in the Premier League and Football League to those across Europe, it's grim reading for football fans in England.

While the cheapest season ticket in the top flight is found at Manchester City (£299), Champions League winners Real Madrid offer a season ticket that costs just £174.65.

Barcelona’s is priced at £103.38 while fans of Bayern Munich can watch their side throughout the campaign for just £109.65.

But providing the rest of the BBC stats are correct, the study has proven the average price of the cheapest tickets across English football has risen at almost twice the rate of the cost of living since 2011.

For English football fans, that is perhaps the most important and concerning statistic.
