Watford broke their transfer record in recruiting Northern Ireland international striker Gerry Armstrong from Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000.
Manager Graham Taylor had first tried to recruit Armstrong from Spurs whilst at Lincoln City several years earlier, and claimed that he'd not only signed a good striker but also Tottenham's best centre-back.
Armstrong would score the club's first goal in the top flight, but despite high-profile success with Northern Ireland in the 1982 World Cup finals tournament, his involvement at Vicarage Road was frequently as a substitute.
He returned to Spain on leaving Watford, signing for Real Mallorca.
