Neil McBain was born in Campbeltown, Argyllshire.
Having earlier played for Manchester United, Everton and Liverpool, the internationally capped centre-half arrived at Vicarage Road in the wake of Frank Barson's suspension.
McBain eventually took over as manager from Fred Pagnam and would enjoy two spells managing the club separated by almost 20 years.
