Almost 13,000 saw Watford go down to a rugged Brentford side at Griffin Park in a third division fixture.
Having failed to take their chances in a goalless first half the visitors, in the words of the Watford Observer, "...dispensed gifts like philanthropists with unlimited means" in the second.
The Hornets' consolation came from a Ken Oliver scissor-kick to Ron Saunders' knock-down; it was his last contribution on his final appearance for the club.
He would play a significant role in Workington's win at Vicarage Road a year later.
