Slavisa Jokanovic is very proud to have met Sir Elton John and says the former Watford chairman gave a small speech to the Hornets dressing room prior to the Golden Boys’ win against Wigan Athletic.

The world famous singer, who remains an honorary life president, returned to Vicarage Road this afternoon after the club officially renamed their newly built east stand after the 67-year-old.

“I spoke with him before the game,” Jokanovic said. “I am very proud to have had the opportunity to meet him today.

“He is a very kind person and he came to the dressing room to speak with me and the players. He enjoys supporting Watford no matter the result.

“Today he is probably a little bit happier because his team won the game. I expect it won’t be the last time we have the opportunity to see him.

“Elton is a very easy person, he is very natural. There was no protocol in the meeting. He spoke to players individually and gave a small speech to all of us.

“I enjoyed, as did the players, the few minutes we spent with him.”

Sir Elton has been a Hornets fan since the age of six and has had two spells as chairman of the club.

In his first, the music superstar and Graham Taylor helped Watford rise from the old fourth division to the top flight under Graham Taylor between 1977 and 1983.

His second spell began in 1997 and, once again along with Taylor, guided the club to consecutive promotions, back into the top flight.

The Golden Boys were ultimately relegated though and in 2002 Sir Elton stood down due to his touring commitments.

His last trip to Vicarage Road, prior to today’s game, came in 2010. He performed a concert at the ground to raise money for the club.
