Bolton Wanderers manager Neil Lennon says midfielder Jay Spearing visited Watford yesterday ahead of a potential switch, as The Trotters look to hijack Millwall's move for Diego Fabbrini.

Millwall were confident of landing Fabbrini on loan but we understand the Italy international has held advanced talks with Bolton and it is believed he is the player Lennon was referring to when he revealed a Watford player visited The Trotters yesterday.

If a deal for Fabbrini can be agreed with Bolton then there is a possibility that combative midfielder Spearing will be heading in the opposite direction.

Spearing started Lennon's first four games at Bolton but has not been in the XI since October 31 and has only made five substitute appearances since.

Bolton have too many midfielders for Lennon's liking, with current Watford loanee Keith Andrews, who is no longer training with the club, Spearing and Medo Kamara deemed surplus to requirements. Andrews has agreed in principle to a switch to MK Dons and Kamara is reportedly close to a move to Israeli club Maccabi Haifa.

"We're hoping there is a deal done there [with Kamara]," Lennon told the BBC.

"There is a bit of interest in Jay Spearing from Watford as well.

"They are two good players, but we feel we are top heavy on centre midfielder and we're looking to enhance the squad in other positions now.

"He [Spearing] was down there yesterday having a look around and we had a player from Watford looking around, but that deal is far from concluded at the moment."

We have been told the Golden Boys have enquired over the availability of Spearing but that the deal is not currently close to completion.

Spearing, 26, joined Bolton for £1.5m from Liverpool, where he made 55 appearances after progressing through the academy.

He won the player of the season award at Bolton in 2013 after a season on loan and has remained their captain despite finding opportunities hard to come by under Lennon.

Fabbrini is another who showed great promise in previous years but has found it hard to secure regular football of late.

The 24-year-old is one of many players who has been told he can leave Vicarage Road.

Winger Lloyd Dyer is another who is looking for a new club. Blackburn Rovers are among those keen to recruit the summer signing from Leicester City.
