Troy Deeney’s fifth goal in as many games during Watford’s 4-1 victory over Reading on Saturday saw him achieve two more career landmarks.

The Hornets captain’s close-range finish at the start of the second half was his 100th league goal in England’s top four divisions (excluding his play-off strike against Leicester City) and also moved him into the top ten of the club’s all-time scorers in all competitions.

Deeney has now scored a total of 77 goals for Watford, the same number as Frank McPherson and Billy Lane, and if he can find the back of the net again at Wigan Athletic tonight he will be eighth in his own right on the all-time list and within three goals of pulling level with Maurice Cook.

If the 26-year-old scores at the DW Stadium he will also emulate his achievement of the 2012/13 season when he netted in six consecutive league matches.

The records section of www.watfordfcarchive.com shows the former Walsall player is one of only five players in the club’s history to score in six straight league games in which they were involved – the others are Danny Graham (twice), Tommy Mooney, Johnny Hartburn and McPherson – with McPherson holding the club record of seven. He achieved that feat in back-to-back seasons – 1928/29 and 1929/30.
