Watford had to battle past Wigan Athletic last night and thanks to two Troy Deeney goals the Hornets clinched a 2-0 victory and moved to the top of the Championship. But who was the Golden Boys’ stand-out performer at the DW Stadium?

Slavisa Jokanovic's side defended resolutely throughout the game. It is difficult to pick a stand-out member of the Hornets' backline but Tommie Hoban once again shone in the unfamiliar role of left wing-back and, later in the game, left-back.

The Golden Boys’ Academy graduate was faultless defensively and showed he is more than capable going forward, with one inspiring second half surge forward.

Ben Watson returned to his former club and excelled. The midfielder was tenacious throughout the game and provided a calming presence on the ball.

Adlene Guedioura continues to impress for the Hornets. His energy across the pitch helps Watford dominate midfield and he showed incredible desire to throw himself in front of a Wigan shot in the second period.

It was also his wonderful cross that allowed Troy Deeney to powerfully head the Golden Boys in front.

Deeney went on to complete a brace when he thumped home a late penalty. Watford’s captain, who is huge personality both on and off the pitch, has netted in his last six matches and is the leader of their promotion charge.
