Troy Deeney proved Watford’s match winner against Wigan Athletic last night. The Hornets’ captain netted both goals in his side’s 2-0 victory at the DW Stadium, a result which lifted the Golden Boys to the top of the Championship.
The deadlock was broken in the second period. Adlene Guedioura’s deep cross found Deeney and the striker powered his header past Ali Al-Habsi and into the bottom corner.
Wigan applied pressure to the Hornets' goal but Watford’s defence held firm. And, on the counter attack, they grabbed a second goal.
Fernando Forestieri broke past Emerson Boyce down the left flank before the defender brought down the forward in the Wigan penalty area.
Boyce appeared to touch the ball before making contact with Forestieri but referee David Coote awarded a spot kick which was emphatically converted by Deeney to clinch victory for the Golden Boys.
