Watford Ladies claimed their first point and clean sheet of their Women’s Super League Two campaign on Sunday and defender Leighanne Robe says confidence is returning to the Golden Girls after a poor start to the season.

A run of four consecutive defeats had left John Solomon’s side bottom of the table - a position they still occupy - but they are at least off the mark following a 0-0 draw against Millwall Lionesses.

And Robe believes the defensive resilience displayed by Watford at the weekend indicates they are ready to challenge for victories.

She told the club website: “It’s (the draw) something to build on, we’ve got a new formation and it seems to be working really well.

“You’ve got the security in the middle and then you’ve also got the wing backs that can get forward but they tuck in so effectively. That means you have still got a back four if one is high and vice versa which is good.

“It is helping us attack more, along with being more secure at the back. Things are really positive in the changing room and amongst the team at the moment.

“The main thing is keeping a clean sheet and start building now towards getting three points next time out.”

The Golden Girls started the contest brightly. Kate Natkiel had a shot saved by Millwall goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill before Emily Heaslip fired wide.

Quantrill then denied Kim Farrow before Hornets stopper Shayla Burgess blocked an effort from Megan Goss.

The game was goalless at the interval. After the restart Millwall threatened and Burgess pushed away Danielle Carlton’s near-post shot.

Watford responded and came close to going in front when Natkiel found Stacie Donnelly but she directed her effort wide.

The Hornets then created a chance for Natkiel that was snuffed out and the striker then had a thunderous drive saved.

It was the final chance of a close contest and the points were shared.
