Slavisa Jokanovic claims Watford have yet to start talks over a new contract despite his current deal expiring this summer but insists he is happy with the situation; stating prioritising the Championship title is more important than his immediate future.

Jokanovic was only offered a contract until the end of the season when he arrived in October but whilst publicly neither party will say as much, we understand the club have given him assurances they want the Serbian to remain at Vicarage Road following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

Both Jokanovic and sources at Watford have claimed the futures of players and staff will not be formally decided until after Saturday’s season finale against Sheffield Wednesday, when the Hornets have the chance to secure the Championship title for the first time.

Jokanovic said: “There is only one time in five years or ten years that you can lift silverware. Some people never lift silverware. We have a chance to do that and we must be concentrated on that. After we finish this game then next week we will speak about my future.”

Jokanovic has won 21 of his 35 games in charge, which means his win ratio of 60 per cent is the highest of any Hornets manager in history.

He has achieved the Pozzos’ goal of securing automatic promotion and there has been no suggestion, publicly or privately, that the former Chelsea midfielder will not be in charge of the Golden Boys when they return to the Premier League after eight years.

Jokanovic said: “I am interested to know exactly what Watford’s plans are and I am sure Watford are interested to hear my plans.

“I am very happy here and it is a great place. Watford gave me a big chance and I have tried to give them something back.

“If you ask me where I would prefer to be, I can be very happy working next season here at Watford.”

“It will be very interesting and very important for me to stay here and try to build a stronger team than we have now,” he added.

Jokanovic, who has reportedly attracted the attention of Sunderland, is not expecting an announcement immediately after the season finishes but is not concerned by a potential delay in securing his future.

He said: “I believe this is normal, not strange. I am not under any pressure and I have a lot of experience in football. I am very happy where I am and I believe it would be very good to stay where I am. When the job is done it is time to talk about my future.

“In front of us is a very long holiday. So we can wait a few days to talk about next season.”
