Etienne Capoue says Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes helped persuade him leave to leave Tottenham Hotspur and join the Hornets.

The French international became the Golden Boys' fifth signing of the summer after completing his switch from White Hart Lane this morning for a club record fee.

The road from Tottenham to Watford is one Gomes took last summer and Capoue revealed the Hornets stopper played a role in his arrival at Vicarage Road.

Speaking the club website, he said: “The president (Gino Pozzo) was very happy to try to bring me here and I spoke with him a lot of times, and we found a good way to do the best for the club.

“I have known Heurelho Gomes for two years and he told me a lot of good things about the club, and this played a part in me choosing Watford.

“For me it’s an opportunity to play. I need to play and to prove my qualities on the pitch, and I think Watford is the best thing for me.”

The 26-year-old moved to Spurs for £9 million two years ago but, partly due to injury, made just 24 appearances in the Premier League.

He does however add top flight experience to the Golden Boys squad, something the midfielder believes will be important during the forthcoming campaign.

He added: “I hope I’ll bring my technical passing football and my experience in the Premier League, and I hope we’ll do very well this year and stay in the Premier League.

“We need some experience because the Championship is very different to the Premier League. The games are very difficult so we need players like Gomes to help us do our best every weekend.”
