Lewis McGugan is on the verge of leaving Watford with the midfielder set to join Championship club Sheffield Wednesday.

The 26-year-old did not travel with the Hornets squad to their pre-season training camp in Germany yesterday and instead headed to Sheffield to undergo a medical.

While the deal is not yet completed - Watford and the Owls remain in talks - McGugan’s move to Hillsborough, where he had two loan spells last season, is expected to go through in the next 24 hours.

The switch will bring an end to McGugan’s two-year spell at Vicarage Road. He arrived in the summer of 2013 on a free transfer after leaving Nottingham Forest, for whom he had made more than 200 league appearances.

He played 37 times during the 2013/2014 campaign and netted 11 goals, however, Watford finished the Championship season in a disappointing 13th place.

McGugan started last season in Watford’s first-team but fell out of favour under Slavisa Jokanovic and was subsequently sent to Wednesday on a short-term loan in November.

He made seven appearances for the Owls before returning to Vicarage Road in January.

Jokanovic then decided to stop McGugan, and four other players, training with the first team. The midfielder re-joined Wednesday on loan until the end of the season at the start of February.

He made a further 15 appearances under Stuart Gray, scoring three times, and impressed sufficiently to hold the Owls’ interest despite the departure of Gray this summer.
