Watford’s Miguel Layun helped Mexico secure a last-gasp victory over Costa Rica in the early hours of this morning, sealing their progression to the Gold Cup semi-finals.
Layun played the full match in what was a very tight contest that was settled by a controversial last-minute penalty in extra-time.
Referee Walter Lopez awarded Mexico a penalty in the 124th minute, after substitute Oribe Peralta was fouled by Costa Rica’s Roy Miller. Replays showed there to be minimal contact and captain Andres Guardado stepped up to convert the spot-kick to see his side into the last four.
Mexico had dominated the match, but were unable to make their pressure count until the final minute, with the match looking set to go to a penalty shoot-out.
Layun and Mexico will now face Panama in the early hours of Thursday morning in Atlanta, for a place in the final, where they will face either the USA or Jamaica.
