Winger Steven Berghuis says he has been assured by AZ Alkmaar that his move to Watford will be completed.

The 23-year-old has decided to switch to Vicarage Road in a deal that is, according to reports in Holland, set to surpass the club-record fee the Hornets paid for Etienne Capoue.

Berghuis visited Watford last week to agree personal terms but the move hasn’t yet been rubber stamped as the Golden Boys and AZ remain in negotiations.

“Watford and AZ have a couple of small points after an agreement,” Berghuis told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. “What it is all about, I do not know. But John van den Brom [the coach at AZ Alkmaar] and Earnie Stewart [the technical director] assured me that it will be fine.

“My father, brother and I have been in London last week. I’m an emotional person and just want to go to a club and I feel comfortable there. It was a visit without any expectations, but I’m certainly open to Watford.”

Berghuis, who admits he will be behind his new Watford teammates in terms of fitness when he joins, can play on either flank or behind the striker.

He began his career at FC Twente but made just 16 appearances for the club either side of a loan spell at VVV-Venlo.

He joined Alkmaar in 2012 for a reported fee of £400,000 and went on to make 27 appearances during the 2012/2013 season. However, only ten of those were starts.

The following campaign proved much more productive for Berghuis. He played 41 times for AZ and netted ten times.

However, the previous season was Berghuis’s most prolific and it may prove to be his last in Holland.
