Watford loanee Diego Fabbrini helped Middlesbrough close the gap on the Championship’s automatic places with a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers on Friday night.

But there was no Hornets reunion, though, with centre-back Gabriele Angella an unused substitute for the Hoops. His last appearance came against Bolton Wanderers at the beginning of October.

However, Daniel Tozser – who left Watford for Rangers over the summer – came on with 16 minutes remaining.

The Italian forward started and played 63 minutes as Aitor Karanka’s side eked out a narrow win over the managerless R’s with Grant Leadbitter’s 90th minute penalty the difference.

Elsewhere in the Championship, striker Matej Vydra was given a solitary of minute as Reading beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1.

Orlando Sa and Nick Blackman were preferred up front by head coach Steve Clarke and Vydra replaced the latter with a minute remaining.

First half goals from Lucas Piazon and Danny Williams sealed the win before Liam Feeney’s late penalty restored some hope for bottom side Bolton.

Daniel Pudil helped Sheffield Wednesday come back from a goal down to eventually win 3-1 in a Yorkshire derby against Huddersfield Town.

The Czech wing-back played the full 90 minutes as the Owls fell behind to a Sean Scannell goal after 53 minutes.

But three goals in the final 12 minutes – two from Lucas Joao and one from Kieran Lee – sealed victory for Carlos Carvalhal’s surprise package.

In the FA Cup, striker Uche Ikpeazu helped Port Vale come from behind to beat National League South side Maidenhead United in their FA Cup first round replay.

Trailing to an Alan Massey goal after 15 minutes, Rob Page’s Valiants rallied and overturned the deficit with goals from Michael O’Connor and AJ Leitch-Smith. Ikpeazu came on for the final 11 minutes.

However, the powerful forward was an unused substitute as Port Vale beat Chesterfield 3-2 on Saturday in League One.

In La Liga, Juanfran helped Deportivo La Coruna to a 2-0 win over Celta de Vigo.

The versatile right-sider played 80 minutes before being replaced by former Newcastle United winger Jonas Gutierrez.

Goals from Lucas Perez and Jonny Castro secured the win for Depor.

In Portgual, Miguel Layun was not involved in Porto’s 2-0 win at Angrense in the Taca de Portugal.
