Quique Sanchez Flores didn’t want to discuss whether Watford were attempting to signing Mario Suarez from Fiorentina but says the midfielder is "the kind of player we need".

We understand Watford are in talks over a deal to bring the Spanish international, who Flores worked with at Atletico Madrid, to Vicarage Road this month.

“I don’t want to talk about names,” Flores said when was asked about Suarez this morning.

“The club is working and if you speak about a player the negotiations can be destroyed.

“I’ve said before that players who come to Watford have the right characteristics.

"The player you’ve mentioned - not me, you - is the kind of player we need.

“We need a centre-midfielder with quality and who is technically and tactically good.

"We need players who are at a high level.”

Watford continue to be linked with a move for Emmanuel Adebayor but we understand the club are no longer interested in the Togo international.

The Hornets are instead focused on players who will benefit the club for years to come. A point stressed by Flores this morning.

He said: “I talk every week with the owner and the sporting director. It is clear what kind of players we want.

"We want players who can improve our project in the next year, not just players who will come on loan or join for three to four months.

“We need to transmit that our project is very serious and we need players who can perform next year. We want players for the future. It is important their characteristics are right.

“The names we want are very clear but if they can’t come to play at Watford then we have to choose other players.”
