Quique Sanchez Flores says both Obbi Oulare and Steven Berghuis still have a lot to learn about English football after handing the duo their full Watford debuts in the Hornets’ 1-0 FA Cup third round win over Newcastle United.

The pair joined Watford in the summer but have had to wait patiently for a place in the starting XI.

Twenty-year-old Oulare hadn’t featured at all for the Hornets until this afternoon while 24-year-old Berghuis had made only six substitute appearances over the past five months.

But the Belgium striker and the Dutch winger were thrust into the starting XI against the Magpies this afternoon.

Oulare played 45 minutes before being replaced while Berghuis featured for just over an hour. And after the contest Flores was asked for his thoughts on how the pair performed.

The Watford boss said: “Oulare hasn’t played for five months but he is a player that is a project for Watford.

"In the last few days he has turned 20 and we need to teach him everything. How the Premier League is, how the team is, how the system is. He has learnt a lot and today he tried.

“He’s a different player to when he came four months ago – completely different. Now he’s improving at the training ground so he’s closer to playing with the team.

“Forty-five minutes in England is completely different to Belgium. It’s a very tough challenge for him and I decided at half-time that this was enough – no more pressure for the player because he’s young.”

Flores continued: “Berghuis is older but he’s coming from Dutch football which is completely different to England. The contact, pace and speed of the game is completely different.

“We need these two players though. They’re the future for Watford. We try to be passionate, try to teach him and show him everything we want. This is a process and he’s in the middle of the process.”
