Abdoulaye Doucoure has not become Watford’s record signing after joining from Rennes in a deal worth £4.5 million.
The Ligue 1 club claimed the French Under-21 international joined the Hornets in a deal worth €10 million – roughly £7.6 million – a fee which would trump what Watford paid for Etienne Capoue or Nordin Amrabat.
However, that isn’t the case and the Doucoure deal cost the Hornets less than the €9 million, or £6.3 million, it took to sign Capoue from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.
January addition Amrabat cost roughly the same as Capoue when he joined from Malaga last month.
