Watford head coach Quique Sanchez Flores insists his much-changed side were competitive during the 3-1 defeat at West Ham United but admits he was concerned after conceding two more penalties.

The Hornets have now conceded four spot-kicks in two matches and Flores was also disappointed with the opening goal after Dimitri Payet set up Andy Carroll.

Flores said: "I am a little bit worried with the two penalties we conceded again and with the first goal we conceded.

"You could see it was very simple that we knew perfectly how Payet would combine with Carroll. We reacted too late so we need to analyse this but the rest of the team did well with a good pack and good shape."

Despite making seven changes to the side, with Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace in mind, Flores believes there were encouraging aspects from the defeat.

He said: “We planned before playing against West Brom to change a lot of players regardless of the result we got. The players knew before that every single player was going to play.

"We knew perfectly we would play against an amazing team that is very tough and powerful and their style is very difficult but I think we were competitive.

"We played good football and had very good possession of the ball. We had attempts and reacted very well."
