Steven Berghuis came off the bench to make his international debut last night as the Netherlands came from behind to draw 1-1 against Republic of Irelend.

The Hornets wide man, who did not start a Premier League game last season, was a 61st-minute substitute for Manchester United’s Memphis Depay.

Shane Long had given Martin O’Neill’s side the lead after half-an-hour but the Euro 2016-bound Irish were denied a confidence-boosting win by Luuk de Jong’s equaliser five minutes from time.

Craig Cathcart is set to be named in Northern Ireland’s 23-man squad for the European Championships and he helped Michael O’Neill’s side keep a clean sheet as they beat Belarus 3-0.

The Watford centre-half played the full 90 minutes as goals from Kyle Lafferty, Conor Washington and Will Grigg fired the Northern Irish to a comfortable win in their last home game before France.

Odion Ighalo and Nordin Amrabat also enjoyed friendly successes as Nigeria and Morocco beat Mali and Congo 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.

Watford’s top scorer from last season was replaced by Brown Ideye after 61 minutes and was able to watch on from the sidelines as Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho struck the winner for Nigeria with 13 minutes remaining.

Amrabat also started as a brace from Hakim Ziyech saw the Morrocans secure a home victory.
