I couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief when the transfer window closed last week.

Don’t get me wrong, the transfer window can be exciting at times, but in the end all the rumours become rather monotonous and it’s hard to keep a track of who’s staying at Watford and who could be leaving.

Finally, the window is closed and we now know who will be representing the Hornets up until January at least. It’s now time for both the players and fans to concentrate on matters on the pitch rather then who our next signing will be or who could be leaving Vicarage Road.

While we are on the topic of the transfer window, one thing for certain is that Gino Pozzo deserves a lot of praise for the business he has made this summer.

The Hornets have strengthened significantly in each department and even the most pessimistic supporter would find it increasingly difficult to deny that this squad is much stronger compared to last season.

Head coach Walter Mazzarri has got options in each position and on the bench we’ve also got players who can change a game in an instant, something which was missing last season.

Some signings, like the ones of Roberto Pereyra and Daryl Janmaat, may have caught the headlines more than others, but I believe our owner has done a lot of positive work in the market.

It was hard not to get excited by Pereyra in his 45-minute cameo against Arsenal given his excellent performance, while the likes of Janmaat, Isaac Success and Younes Kaboul also looked good during our recent fixture against the Gunners.

While the jury may be out on a few of the other new additions, what is clear to me is that the players Gino has brought in will improve the side. It’s now up to Mazzarri to mould this squad into a team and get them playing as he likes.

The signs are certainly promising for this upcoming season given the signings we’ve made and our performances in the opening few games.

Against Southampton, we showed that we can dig in and grind out a result, while against Chelsea we pushed a top team all the way and were made to pay for silly mistakes in the final ten minutes.

When we faced Arsenal, we were overpowered in the first half by a magnificent performance from the Gunners. In the second half though, it was a completely different story.

Mazzarri brought on Pereyra and Janmaat and also changed the formation and the Italian’s changes worked.

The Hornets were the better team in the second half and if we had got the second goal we deserved, I think we could have gone on and got a draw in that game.

Yes, we would have liked to have picked up some more points from our opening three fixtures, but look at the sides we’ve faced. Watford arguably have the toughest start in the Premier League with their first five fixtures.

While the Golden Boys have been dealt a rather difficult hand by the Premier League in terms of their opening fixtures, I believe the Hornets have a perfect opportunity to record their first victory of the season this weekend against West Ham.

The Hammers have hardly set the world alight so far and with Slaven Bilic’s men struggling with injuries to the likes of Dimitri Payet, Manuel Lanzini and Andy Carroll amongst others, it might just be an ideal time to play them.

If we can build on our showing against Chelsea as well as our second half display vs Arsenal, I can’t see why we can’t get some points off the Hammers on Saturday.

Let’s get behind Mazzarri and his men over the course of the next few weeks and give them the support they deserve.
