Former Watford striker Gifton Noel-Williams says he is committed to Burnham for the long haul after taking over the managerial reins at the club.

He faces a tough task in rejuvenating the Hellenic League Premier Division side’s fortunes and they are yet to win a game this season.

Regardless, Noel-Williams is keen to test himself and is looking forward to working alongside Hornets’ legend Luther Blissett, who is head of football development at the club.

“First things first, I love a challenge. I want to be a manager and to get to the level I want to get to you need to start somewhere,” Noel-Williams said.

“I have the chance to work with Luther at the start of a project which is going to take some time to come together.

“I like what the club is trying to do and they are creating a continuity and philosophy which I want to be a part of building.”

The 36-year-old’s tenure got off to an ignominious start on Saturday as Burnham went down to a 6-3 loss against Longlevens AFC – their 13th straight league defeat.

Needless to say, Noel-Williams’ new charges are rooted to the bottom of the table, but he says he has already seen improvements during his short time in charge.

He said: “It was a good performance against Longlevens and I really did see a lot of positives, there were a lot of things we did at the weekend that I was pleased with.

“I always said it would take time to get to grips with some of the new things I am trying to implement, so overall I was pleased.

“We scored three goals for the first time this season and that is a big positive.

“I don’t think any players let us down, it was just that they were doing things they haven’t been asked to do before so it will take time.”

Blissett spoke glowingly of Noel-Williams’ credentials after his appointment and it is hard to overlook a career which has seen him play in all four English leagues.

Noel-Williams believes his playing career will benefit him in his new vocation, but understands non-league football presents unique challenges.

He said: “I know what it takes to play this level but I’m also lucky to have played in League Two, League One, the Championship and Premier League.

“I can use that experience. At the same time I know I can’t expect a player who trains twice a week to do the same things that a player who trains five times and is a professional would do.”

Burnham’s next chance to find their feet comes against a Royal Wooton Bassett Town side who sit seventh in the league.

Despite the differing form, Noel-Williams wants his side to focus on themselves against the experienced outfit.

He said: “They know how to play at this level and are a decent side. Like in any match we want to impose our style, play some attractive football and score some goals.”
