Adlene Guedioura played the full 90 minutes as Algeria started their final phase of World Cup qualifying by being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Cameroon.

The hosts, who also included Leicester City duo Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani, took an early lead through El Arbi Soudani but were pegged back midway through the first half by Benjamin Moukandjo’s equaliser for the visitors, who had former Hornet Allan Nyom in their starting XI.

The result leaves the Algerians third in Group B ahead of Wednesday’s key trip to early group leaders Nigeria.

Sebastian Prodl was a 71st-minute substitute as Austria twice came from behind before they succumbed to a 3-2 defeat in Serbia courtesy of Southampton’s Dusan Tadic’s winner with 16 minutes of normal time remaining.

A first-half brace from Newcastle United’s Aleksandar Mitrovic, either side of Marcel Sabitzer’s goal, had put the Serbians 2-1 to the good at the break before they were pegged back for a second time by Marc Janko.

The defeat, following Thursday’s 2-2 draw at home to Wales, leaves the Austrians with work to do as they have now slipped to fourth in Group D, three points behind joint leaders Serbia and Republic of Ireland.

Their next World Cup qualifier is at home to Martin O’Neill’s men on November 12.
