Paraguayan side Club Olimpia has been handed a six-point deduction by FIFA from the nation's top flight over their payment plan to Watford for the transfer of Javier Acuna.

The striker signed for the nation's league champions in 2014 from the Hornets, but it has now been penalised over a re-negotiated payment plan for him, which Olimpia claims was negotiated with Watford earlier this year.

Acuna played for the Hornets for only a single season in 2013-14, and made 12 appearances for the club during his time at Vicarage Road, scoring once.

The fee, when he transferred to Club Olimpia in his native Paraguay in August 2014, was undisclosed – but despite selling the player to Numancia in June, it has still not been fully repaid.

The side, nicknamed The Dean, has denied any wrongdoing and says it expects the "administrative error to be corrected as soon as possible".

In a statement, the club said: "We are surprised at a new communication when the parties [Watford and Olimpia] agreed on March 11 a payment agreement for the transfer of Carlos Javier Acuna, with full compliance of payments from this club.

"We are doing all the necessary procedures so that this new administrative error is corrected as soon as possible, without affecting the interests of the club."

Club Olimpia has contacted Watford to corroborate its version of events as it looks to fend off the deduction - which would not be the first error on FIFA's part in similar circumstances.

It has already overturned a point penalty from the world governing body earlier this year regarding financial irregularities around fellow ex-player Matias Gimenez, who played for the club in 2013.
