Craig Cathcart believes Watford showed they can fight as well as play football after their 2-1 win over Burnley.

The Hornets were in control during the first half on Saturday after scoring twice.

But ten man Burnley caused problems for Walter Mazzarri's side in the second half in a nervous end to the contest.

Watford defender Cathcart said: "The first half could not have gone any better really. We were on top of the game and got the two goals. We struggled in the second half to get that third goal.

"I think if we got that third goal their heads might have dropped and maybe we could have got a couple more. But credit to them.

"They stuck in the game and made it very difficult for us. We were hanging on at the end but we showed we can fight as well as play football."

Cathcart hopes the team can build on their two victories in a row heading into this weekend's game against his former club at Old Trafford.

He said: “We knew they’d come at us. They’ve got players that can make it very difficult for us especially when they go a little bit more direct. But in the end we managed to fight throughout the game and get the three points which is the most important thing.

"We go into a difficult period with Manchester United next week so it’s something we can hopefully build on now."
