Watford v West Ham United ratings: How did the Hornets rate in habitual game of two halves at Vicarage Road?

Troy Deeney's penalty threatened to begin a re-enactment of the start the Hornets enjoyed against Leicester back in November, but instead, they didn't come close to testing Darren Randolph until the final seconds of the game from that moment.

Make no bones about it, West Ham are a good side - there's a reason they came into the game on the back of three away wins from four, and after they took a stranglehold of the game after the break and levelled through Andre Ayew, a point ends up as one gained for Walter Mazzarri's side.

Mauro Zarate's substitution deep into first-half injury time didn't help matters, as Abdoulaye Doucoure offered nothing going forward in the second half, but the Hornets will need to improve their decision making in the final third next week against Southampton.

Here's how we rated the Golden Boys:

Heurelho Gomes - 8

Following a fairly quiet first half, was in top form to deny West Ham a number of times - including a wonderful one-handed stop from Jose Fonte’s header. Not a lot he could do for Antonio's shot off the post, but could have been quicker to get up to Ayew's follow-up.

Daryl Janmaat - 6

Started brightly, but silly booking before the break. Kept Robert Snodgrass relatively quiet but not as much of an attacking threat as he has been previously.

Younes Kaboul - 7

Mopped up well early on. Looked a little more ropey as the game wore on; let a speculative effort run right across him on the edge of the six-yard box, and was outpaced by Michail Antonio for the equaliser, but generally strong.

Miguel Britos - 6.5

Might have had his first goal of the season with a better-placed header late on, and alongside Kaboul was pretty solid at the back. Vital challenge on Snodgrass to stop him tapping home in the first half.

Jose Holebas - 6

Put in some really poor deliveries from set-pieces and never really got hold of Sofiane Feghouli in the first half. A couple of crucial interventions, including a goal-saving header late on, after the break, and dealt better with his Spanish adversary.

Etienne Capoue - 5.5

Still looks more energetic than he did earlier in the season, but didn’t do enough to affect the game going forward.

Valon Behrami - 7

Everywhere as per usual, Watford always look more solid with him in midfield and he never gave West Ham a moment’s rest.

Tom Cleverley - 6

His ball over the top began the move which led to Watford’s early penalty, but that was probably his brightest moment in an unspectacular performance, with mixed results from set pieces too.

M’Baye Niang - 6.5

Bright before half-time and was battered from pillar to post by the West Ham side. Faded after half-time but produced some bright moments again after the Hammers’ equaliser. End product often lacking bar one fizzing strike which went just over early on, but his strength always a threat to Kouyate.

Troy Deeney - 7

Helped to win penalty and then score it. Not often as central as he would like for tactical reasons, but looks a yard quicker in recent weeks and benefitted, in the opening half hour, from having genuine support alongside him.

Mauro Zarate - 7.5

Full of tricks and always lively, and a real shame his afternoon was cut short by injury. Helped to bring Watford forward from midfield and was pivotal to their bright start, winning the penalty which set them on their way.

Substitutes

Abdoulaye Doucoure (for Zarate, 45) - 5
Never got involved in the game. It was easy to forget he was playing for long periods of the second half, bar one header from a free-kick.

Craig Cathcart (for Janmaat, 51) - 6.5
Did a good job on Snodgrass in the second half and was steady in defence. Offered little going forward - but then he's a centre-half playing at right-back.

Isaac Success (for Niang, 82) - N/A
