Watford captain Troy Deeney has said in a new TV interview he told his young son he was visiting 'football camp' rather than serving a five-month spell in prison.

Deeney served time in 2012 after admitting a count of affray and made the heartbreaking admission to comedian Lloyd Griffith in a new BBC web series, while the pair were discussing his time at the club.

He said: "I've got two kids now, but I just had my son at that point.

"One thing I'd never do is lie to my kids - but the one lie I have told is to tell my son I was at football camp. He was too young to know about it at that age."

The pair also talked about lighter topics including the worst prank pulled in the Hornets dressing room, to which Deeney replied: "There was a stage where dead mice ended up being in people’s wash bags.

"I ended up having one put in my car, which was my car at the time, with a seatbelt on."

He also revealed the player with the 'worst banter' in the squad, saying: "Adrian Mariappa is boring. He should've been a chess player."
