Watford Ladies were dealt a cruel blow on the final day of the WSL2 Spring Series, as Ashlee Hincks struck a 91st-minute winner to give Millwall a 2-1 win at Gaywood Park on Saturday.

The Lady Hornets finish the unusual season, consisting of only nine games before a full season restarts in September, in eighth place out of the 10 second-tier clubs, but could have ended as high as sixth had the final-day twist of fate worked in their favour.

But in the end, Millwall emerged with three valuable points after twice taking the lead at Kings Langley, and started the match the better when Ella Rutherford saw her early shot saved by Lucy Gillett.

Watford took time to find their rhythm, but once they did Rinsola Babajide fizzed a vicious cross into the box, which just lacked a yellow shirt to tuck it home from close-range.

Babajide nearly opened the scoring herself when she first fired wide before attempting to round Millwall goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill, but the alert stopper got two hands on the ball to keep the visitors level.

She continued her assault on the Lionesses' defence after half-time, setting up Leah Cudone within a minute of the restart, only for her team-mate to miss the target when well-placed.

And after spurning more chances at the start of the second half, Millwall broke the deadlock shortly after the hour when a free-kick was headed home by Billie Brooks.

Watford found themselves up against it when Danielle Puddefoot was shown a second yellow card for a foul within minutes of falling behind, but they showed strength of character to forge an equaliser with Merrick Will's powerful drive.

Pushing for a winner was always going to leave a numerically disadvantaged Lady Hornets side exposed, and so it proved in injury time, when Hincks' low shot beat Gillett in the first minute of added time to steal the points at the death.
