After a 2016/17 campaign which saw him play translator for Walter Mazzarri, Miguel Britos says he is enjoying a “simpler” life under new Watford head coach Marco Silva.

Mazzarri’s failure to grasp English was undoubtedly one of the key contributors to his downfall at Vicarage Road, and Britos, who played under the Italian at Napoli, would often act as a go between at the club’s London Colney training ground.

Silva’s arrival has put an end to such extra responsibilities and Britos says the Portuguese boss has had a positive impact since arriving in Hertfordshire.

“He has brought new ideas about the football he wants to play. He is a good coach and in the beginning we have to improve,” Britos said.

“I knew Mazzarri from Napoli and I don’t know if it is much easier this season. It is a good thing that Marco Silva speaks English and it makes things simpler.

“It is a new season, new coach, new players and we start well, so it is always positive when you start with a good result.”

That good result came at the expense of Liverpool, as Britos took centre-stage in the third minute of injury-time to force home a late leveller in a dramatic 3-3 draw.

It was no less than the Hornets deserved as they showed a level of commitment which was lacking at times last term to outfight Liverpool for much of the 90 minutes.

Britos was delighted with both his personal moment of glory and Watford’s overall performance, which saw them compete until the very last.

“I think today was positive, because when we went 3-2 down we never gave up. The goal came in the last minute and this is a positive. We have to keep this attitude now,” he said.

“It was very nice, especially at home, to score in the last minute is a good feeling and we are happy because we got one point from a very difficult match against a big team.”

While a point gained against a side which will hope to be competing in the upper reaches of the table is a plus, Britos still took issue with the three goals shipped by Watford.

He hopes the Hornets can learn quickly from the goals and says defensive frailties will be worked on ahead of a trip to Bournemouth next weekend.

He said: “Of course [conceding three goals is disappointing] especially because I am a defender and I am not happy when we concede.

“We have to see what happened during the week and correct our mistakes and try and perform better next time.”
