A dismal defensive display saw Watford go down to a 4-1 defeat against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Goals from Elias Kachunga and Aaron Mooy put the visitors 2-0 up inside 23 minutes before a straight red card for Troy Deeney reduced Watford to 10 men.

The Watford skipper flew into a reckless challenge on Collin Quaner just after the half hour mark as Watford capitulated.

More poor defending allowed Laurent Depoitre to make it 3-0 and a second booking for Jonathan Hogg evened up the player count.

Abdoulaye Doucoure scored a stunning half-volley to reduce the arrears but Mooy had the final say on proceedings, converting a penalty after a foul by Doucoure.

Here’s how we rated the Hornets on a day to forget for Marco Silva’s side.

Heurelho Gomes – 5

Very little chance with any of the goals and was given next to no protection by those in front of him. Made one good stop to deny Tom Ince in the second half.

Adrian Mariappa – 3

Watford Observer:

Endured a torrid 29 minutes before being hooked for Roberto Pereyra. Failed to pick up for the Huddersfield second and struggled to deal with the visitor’s early on.

Sebastian Prödl – 4

The best of a bad bunch in the Watford back three and coped better than both Mariappa and Kabasele but still well short of the standard required.

Christian Kabasele – 3

Looked well short on confidence and repeatedly lost track of Huddersfield runners throughout the game. Regularly exposed looks uncomfortable on the left-hand side of a back three.

Daryl Janmaat – 4

Much of Huddersfield’s best moments came down their left and Janmaat was worked throughout. Battled on but was often found wanting.

Abdoulaye Doucouré – 5

Stunning strike gave Watford the briefest sniff of a comeback and Doucoure upped his game in the wake of finding the net.

Made a block on the goal line at the death to prevent Town going further ahead but didn’t influence the match in the way he so often can. Clumsy challenge to concede late penalty.

Etienne Capoue – 3

Watford Observer:

Completely anonymous display from the Frenchman and he was made no impact on the game. Injuries and suspensions will mean Silva has to turn to the off colour midfielder once again.

Jose Holebas – 2

Embarrassed himself in the build up to the third goal as he went down holding his face to allow Depoitre a clear run at goal.

Having given the ball away, he had to at least put pressure on the Huddersfield man and replays suggested there was nowhere near enough contact to force the left-back down.

Andre Carrillo – 5.5

The best of Watford’s attacking options and looked like the only player capable of creating for much of the match.

Had the beating of his marker and put in a number of dangerous crosses.

Richarlison – 4.5

A quiet afternoon for the Brazilian and he wasted the home side’s best chance of the first half when he blazed over on the volley.

Troy Deeney – 2

Watford Observer:

Anonymous for half an hour and then made the most ridiculous of challenges to get himself send off. Flew in on Florent Hadergjonaj when there was little danger with the ball out wide.

The striker’s actions were born out of frustration and he let his side down. Hardly showed the leadership qualities expected of a captain and spurned another chance to lay claim to be Watford’s main man once again.

SUBS

Roberto Pereyra – 4

Brought on in place of Mariappa as Silva desperately looked to breathe life into the Hornets but didn’t really impress.

Andre Gray – 4.5

His pace gave Watford a genuine outlet in attack and Gray put in a busy if at times ineffectual display.

Had a fine chance to make it 3-2 but dragged his shot woefully wide and looks short on confidence.

Stefano Okaka - N/A

Not given long enough to impress.
