Watford's Troy Deeney could see his turbulent season at Vicarage Road ended this month with Newcastle United reportedly making the 29-year-old their top target in the January transfer window.

The Magpies are in desperate need of additional firepower to add to their limited attacking options, and ESPN report they have enquired over his availability without making a formal bid to date.

The Hornets captain has become Mr Watford since his £250,000 move from Walsall in 2010, but has found himself in and out of the starting line-up this season due to a mixture of poor form and suspension.

Deeney has just ended a four-match ban, his second of the season, for a red card he picked up against Huddersfield Town on December 16.

He has scored at least 10 league goals in each of his last six seasons with the club, but has only two penalties to his name during the current campaign.
