Troy Deeney says he is already relishing the thought of pre-season after enduring a disrupted season for Watford this term.

A groin injury suffered before the start of the current campaign ensured a slow start to the season and the forward struggled to get going before the turn of the year.

The Watford skipper is, therefore, loathed to see the 2017/18 campaign come to a close at Old Trafford on Sunday and is eager to make up for lost time before the start of next term.

“Purely on a personal note, It feels like the season never really started for me, but that is mine to deal with,” Deeney wrote in Saturday’s programme.

“With the way training is now and the way the lads are in shape, a pre-season injury is getting tougher and tougher to get back on the level from.

“I’m in a great place now with a good team around me and it’s time to reinvest in my own condition and get back flying for Watford in the next pre-season; I’m buzzing for that already.”

Deeney missed a spot kick in the final home game of the season against Newcastle United, but a 2-1 win was still enough to secure Watford’s top flight status.

Watford have toiled to find consistency this season and a fine start to the campaign gave way to poor form under Marco Silva, which cost the former head coach his job.

Javi Gracia’s arrival helped steady matters at Vicarage Road, but Deeney accepts the Hornets could have achieved more this term.

He does, however, feel that in Gino Pozzo Watford have an owner who will strive for further improvements next season.

“This year will go down as one which might have been – although when you look at the size of the clubs in real trouble lower down the table, you realise that we do have a lot of ambition,” he said.

“Just surviving isn’t enough for the people who run this club. You can see their ambition alive at the training ground every day.

“Gino and Scott (Duxbury CEO) are amongst it all and make up the DNA of this place. They’re never happy settling for what they’ve got.

“I think when you look around at some of the talent in this squad, we are only a few minor adjustments and a slice of luck with injuries away from competing in the top half of the table.”
