Watford's Lee Williamson finally completes transfer to Championship-rivals Sheffield United

Lee Williamson’s drawn-out transfer to Sheffield United has finally be completed for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £500,000.

Williamson’s transfer to Bramall Lane has been on the cards for a couple of weeks but has not been completed as the midfielder was out of the country on his holidays.

Watford CEO Julian Winter confirmed Williamson was keen to move to United regardless of who the new Hornets’ manager would be.

Williamson, who had a year left on his contract, was a first team regular at Vicarage Road in the first half of the season but fell out of favour with Brendan Rodgers and was loaned out to Preston North End, who were also interested in his signature.

Agreed..

Clearly was going had Rodgers still been here but I do remember Malky played him in a different role during his time as care-taker so thought he might have got more of a chance but money talks and anything around 500k is a decent fee.

He was on a fairly high wage as well (7.5k)

Don’t disagree this is good business but there are players I would rather have seen go first – Sadler, Useless, Banguara

I liked Lee Williamson. He has a attractive smooth passing style. But since Boothroyd ruined our finances, we have to sell the players that people want to buy. I wonder how many we will lose over the summer?

Good business, decent fee. Trouble with saying who we would like to go is that we need to have an offer for them first. I hope the fee will go towards bringing new players in and the drop from the wages bill will give MM some flexibilty in the wage structure.

Agree, you can only sell the players others want to buy.
It will still be good if we give away some of the high earning, low perfoming players.

Yup, good business I guess, if the fee is as suggested here. I am sure I heard that he was one of the higher earners at the club so all in all not a bad move.

Must say though, I liked Williamson and thought that he had so much more to offer - shame that we will no longer get to see that.

Very good business-he was useless at free kicks most of the time that he was allowed to take them. Hope we can keep Tommy Smith though.

How was he one of our top goalscorers?
he only got something like 3 goals in since we bought him.

500k can buy a decent player from lower division look at mike williamson he was cheap and is very good

or it could be put towards the wage bill

Hopefully put the fee towards keeping Tommy Smith,am glad he's gone and JJ O'Toole is returning.
Watch him bang in a 30 yarder against us in the 2nd game......which is more than he ever did for the Horns.Good deal all round for us,£500,000? Are you sure Blackwell!

Well 200k got us 2 very good players in Cowie and M.Williamson...

(It depends what sort of player you want..or think we can afford really?

Williamson wasn't one of our top goalscorers...infact his goals this season came under Malky and I remember a free kick at Plymouth but not much else.

Now had we sold a Smith or Priskin for 500k then you would have a point.

Most fans know we are in bother off the pitch and need to raise funds from somewhere.

Believe me 7.5k a week for a player who wasn't playing for us much after Rodgers came in is too much!

Lee was a good buy for us at the time and I agree with others on this post; he probably had a lot more to offer and somehow I can't help feeling that we will rue the day we sold him. But hey onwards and upwards ......hopefully

Not bad in the middle - useless out wide. Couldn't take a free kick to save his life. Ran the game against Stoke at home last year when we had 10 men but to be fair 500k is good (if true). I agree with WFC4Ever that more will go. Lets hope we sell enough fringe players and keep hold of the likes of Smith, Priskin, M Williamson and O'Toole.

Yes, certainly worse under this new bunch of carrot crunchers.

your middle paragraph defies all logic....
He was pants, went missing when it got tough, didn't score more than a handful of goals, in and out of the side, no better than we already had and his hair was too curly.

I think Sheff Utd just buys our players for the sake of it, certainly more upset with Tony Currie going there that's for sure.

Yes and your Chums sanctioned his signing and wages!

Lee was a good player but replaceable. I think the club have done well in getting rid of some of the top earners in Poom, Kabba, Bromby, Williamson... That is a big chunk out of the wage bill and has raised around £1 million for the club through transfer fee's. Good business, Theo to go next then hopefully Eustace and Ellington...

GrahamTaylor, Watford says...

VoR why do you hate this board? Their hands are tied and have to live with the legacy of the previous regime. Not sure what they could have done differently they have already coughed up nearly £5M of their own cash to stop us going in admin. I did say a year ago Simpson was a crook and nobody believed me and there are still skeletons in the closet I promise. Let’s just hope they never come out. WFC are living day to day saving the pennies to pay the next invoice that lands on the mat. This is more than cost cutting, this is survival.

Gimpson and Cashton got a hard-on sat in an exec box with all those Premiership chairman and gambled the family silver all on one number. Naming rights LOL, I think we should name the ground after the pair of them… how about Sh!taridge Road cos from where I sit we haven’t got much of a ground to look at. If you cast your mind back that was the first promise Homer made us and was exactly what Cashton was employed to do, develop the stadium, yet you blame the Russos?

500K for an average player is good business, at best he is box to box but has no end product to speak of, if it’s a choice between the two I would rather keep O’Toole, but fear he will go as well. Hex It’s not just about what offers you get the players also has to want to leave and WFC are you over the odd why bother. Nobody is going to take on a stupid contract in todays, market not in the championship.

Those expecting the money to be reinvested don’t count on it pay off the creditors. WFC will deal in loans free transfers and the odd 100K deal here and there, sorry to disappoint. Smithy next boys £1.5M I believe.
