Malky Mackay delighted with first morning's work

Watford’s players returned to a scorching London Colney today to begin their preparations for the new Championship campaign.

In temperatures approaching 30 degrees, manager Malky Mackay and his new backroom staff put all the senior squad, including the likes of Nathan Ellington, John Eustace and John-Joe O’Toole, who were on loan at other clubs at the end of last season, through their paces on their first day back.

“It’s always the case,” smiled the Hornets boss. “No matter what happens weather-wise the first day of pre-season is always baking hot. But it’s great to be back in.

“In the last couple of weeks I’ve been all over the place in terms of courses and various things happening, but to actually get back to the coal face again...in the last couple of days we’ve had the staff in making sure that the organisation is all correct and the way the standards are the way I want them, and the structure’s in place the way I want it. To that effect, this morning the players have come in and it’s gone like clockwork.

“I’m delighted that things are in place the way I want them in terms of the structure and they came in and they’ve worked well this morning. It’s day one, it’s morning one but it’s good to be back.”

Ellington to be rehabilitated and get his career back on track at Watford i wonder? His wages are probably a drain though so expect him to be moved out. When's Ramadan this year or has it gone?

On wages alone I agree the club probably would rather offload him but you would hope that NE wouild have turned up today willing to do his best for this club especially since we've on our second (third I guess if you could Malkys first stint) since he was last here. I take it Derby are def not taking him then?

I hope people give Ellington at least a semblance of half a chance... The farce of his time here is not all of his making. Playing to his strengths, on the ground and with Malky and Dyche putting the fear of the gods (all of em) into anyone going through the motions... he might yet surprise a few people. Depending on who remains on the squad after comings and goings... we may just need him on board. Now is not the time to pick ourselves a boo boy before a ball has been kicked.

It is wishful thinking to believe that Ellington might enjoy a renassaince under Malky. Why should he? Boothroyd could not get good performances out of him, Jewell(supposedly his mentor) could not get him to play, Clough saw no future in him, even on what was effectively a free transfer, Rodgers could see no role for him at Watford. Malky would be a magician indeed to suceed with Ellington where these others have failed. There is something wrong with the young man at this moment, and it seems we must just "carry" him while he sorts himself out--but is that possible?
