Player given permission to talk to club concerned

Tommy Smith’s second stint as a Watford player could be coming to an end after the Hornets revealed this evening they have received a £1.8m bid for the striker.

The 29-year-old has been given permission to talk to the club involved, whose identity is not known, but the Watford Observer understands that it is not Reading. Furthermore, it is not a club who had previously tabled an offer - all of which were rejected - for the two-time Watford Observer Player of the Season.

This latest development came after the printed version of the Watford Observer went to press this afternoon, although we were aware that a new offer had been received and published this information.

Watford Chairman Jimmy Russo said: “We’ve received a new bid today for Tommy and we will allow him to speak to the club in question. This is a new club that has expressed a desire to sign Tommy.”

Speculation over Smith’s future has intensified over the past fortnight and most Watford fans will regard his departure – if he does move on – with a disappointing sense of inevitability, given the Hornets were always likely to find it hard to reject a significant offer for their most prized asset.

The versatile striker’s 17 strikes last season not only gave him his most productive campaign in front of goal to date, but also lifted him to 14th in the Hornets’ all-time scoring charts. Furthermore, he also became only the 22nd player in their history to pass the 300-appearance mark.

Do you think Watford would be right to sell Smith for £1.8m? Tell us your thoughts by commenting below.

1.8million for 3rd best player in championship if you listen to our manager ? still to cheap for my liking BUT as long as not Reading will have to accept it i suppose BUT very very disappointing ,what is prise of avoiding relegation i wonder ?

Sadly it does sound like reasonable business for the club. The reality is that we do not have the bargaining power to be too dictorial in these situations and when we need to sell, sell we must. I think although fans would be dissapointed, tere has been a sense of inevitablity about this. The one thing on most fans minds seems to be 'as long as he doesn't go to Reading'. On another point it is interesting to see Readings fans becoming increasingly frustrated by their Chairmans lack of ease to spend his pennies, especially after a big sale. Good luck Tommy and thank you Mr Russo for the refreshing openess that we have seen this week.

Hope it's a Prem club. Think 1.8M is too cheap, maybe 2.5M would be more realistic. Glad it is not Reading and Judas.

It's sad that we have to sell him rather than build a team around him. However WFC is a business with too many overheads and a cashflow problem. herts hornet is right to question to loss of revenue if we go down but i think from a business point of view and club stability they need the cash now and will continue to reduce costs to the required level over the next 12 months whatever Div we are in. Lets hope we don't have to sell too many others but the club needs to survive. Good luck Tommy and thanks for the enjoyment you have given us!!

A reasonable offer, but not brilliant. It sets the benchmark for other clubs now. I would still prefer him to sign a contract extension and stay, but if he goes to a better club and gets regular football then good luck to him. Perhaps if he does not make the first team we could write into the contract to have him back on loan!!

as much as we all want Smudge to stay, we are not in the best financial position and £1.8 million as well as his £7k per week wages off our books, is good business but unfortunate. Duke and Priskin will do the job im sure!! lol

You've all been brain washed into the "R's" way of thinking, he must be loving it reading all these comments!

1.8 is derisory, is he that much worse than Henderson?
What would be the big deal to offer him a 1 yr deal funded by our very own silent SEJ also funding the wages of GR at the same time?

1st and foremost we need the team to be successful before moving on to other fundings and by letting him leave, to be replaced by an unknown is definitely bad business! He is our talisman, our captain, our biggest asset, show us you have some ambition on the playing side jimmy for christ sake otherwise league 1 beckons again unless we get real lucky

Whatever you thought of the other lot they did their best for the playing side, which I still maintain would have been fruitful if it weren't for the boo boys destroying all confidence.

Gutted. Tommy is the best Watford player of the last decade and, although I wish him well personally, I hope we don't come to regret selling him for so little come the end of the season. I thought the point of commenting was to give your opinions. Obviously the subject is whether this is good value, so we are commenting on it.

Agree that for all their faults the previous board did invest in the playing side, and the boo boys eroded the teams confidence to the point they froze after 20 mins without scoring.

Hopefully the Russo brothers will steady the ship and invest where needed. I think Tommy probably feels the time is right to move on, and if that is the case then they had no chance of keeping him.

Wether tommy Smits goes or stays will have little effect on Watford's season. We are not such a small club that a guy who has never got anywhere near playing for his country can have that bigger impact on our season. Some other squad man will become the darling of the masses. It has happened before and will happen again.

Helguson left with us just surviving relegation, we bought in King and that was money well spent. After all is said and done, does any of us enjoy playing in the premier league anyway? It is not the greatest league to sit and watch when you are Watford.

Funnily enough, I was thinking back to when Tommy Smith was re-signed from Derby by Watford. The majority of fans - yes, the majority, referred to him as an ex who had seen his better days. The club were slated for being unimaginative and tight, signing an 'average' player. How times change. Just a memory but it does make me smile sometimes.

Oh who am i kidding would have been great to keep him but the real world means thd club has to accept any realistic offers for any of our players, TS being one of the best we have.

Really? Season before last we wouldn't have made the play offs but for Smith. Take away his contribution last year and we wouldn't be in the Championship now. His going leaves a huge gap in the team.

Tommy is a big loss. The biggest in quite some time. Bigger, I think, than Ashley Young. Much bigger than either Helguson or Henderson who, to be quite frank, were not in the same league as Tommy Smith.

I will try to be constructive. I agree with Enlightened's views on vOr but it was a shame that he degenerated to the level that I occasionally do with vOr...which is vOr's normal level.
Fact 1. The Board have inherited a non viable situation. KAs £10m to avoid administartion was correct...and add the underlying £3-4m a season loss...you are going the way of Southampton.
Fact 2. The current Board are in a minority shareholding scenario so can hardly lob their own money at this even if they wanted to.
Fact 3. Jimmy and Vince do have the club's interests at heart, always did, as evidenced by their unsecured loans to buy the Vic back and to buy MK.
Fact 4. Jimmy and Vince made their own money in probably the toughest trading environment in the country bar none...selling to supermarkets. I cannot think of anyone else who I would rather have wheeling and dealing on our behalf.
Fact 5. Reading...top that or you lot and BR shove off and massage your Chairman's ego who even names a ground after himself rather than selling the rights...but is probably not going to back his manager for his prime target even with 6.5m and parachute money in his pocket. vOr...now that is a guy to question.
Fact 6. vOr backs and associates himself with discredited, exploitive bullies, or who knows, may be one of them??? It says it all. We won't go through the history yet again. We all know their lack of integrity...vOr is one and the same.

Jimmy, if you have to sell at that price old buddy, you have my backing. If you bid Reading up yet further, you also have my backing. Screw them for every penny. It is our club that matters, not Reading. When their Chairman goes they will sink back the old Div 3, with a nice but empty ground. We have a new board, a new manager and some new faces in the team already. OK so we haven't paid millions for them, but that's good. We've spent millions getting players in and paying high wages and that got us knowwhere either. Let's have a reality check here, we are at best (currently) a mid table championship club, who is never going to make loads of money from attendances due to our capacity limitations at VR. Our aim should be to build up a very competitave attractive club that is financially stable, stay in this division (which is arguably the hardest division anyway given that you will only really succed in the premiership is you have a squillionair backer. And get ourselves up to a standard that means we might get the odd promotion push and possibly a season in the limelight, take the parachute payment and duck back down again. We will never be Man Utd or Man city unfortunately. I am happy to support a (what will become) well run fan focussed club as I have been for the last 30 years. through the good and bad times.

Okay so Smith is going, in my opinion £1.8m is good for a player entering the last season of his contract. We have sold fans favourites for as long as I can remember - Barnes, Coton, James, Furlong, Mooney, Helguson, Young..the list is endless. We are a selling club & when a player leaves we move on, the next Watford hero is only just around the corner. We moan like mad on this forum but I'd rather be in our position than be like Leeds, Charlton, Southampton or Norwich for example. For all we know these signings could be great buys, as were Cowie & Williamson who were near enough unknown before they joined.

VoR, you quite rightly say that the boo boys ruined our chances of a promotion back to the Prem a couple of years ago. The way the crowd turned on Mahon was unforgivable as however limited his talents were ha ALWAYS gave his all. That was where it all started going wring IMO.

However, are you not now doing exactly the same by constantly questioning the board and rubbishing their every move without even giving them a chance?

The current situation at the club is unfortunate, and there are many reasons for that. Because of our situation the Russo's have no choice other than to sell Tommy for the best price they can.

It seems to me VoR that you are now becoming part of the problem, just like the boo boys you so rightly slated.

Give the Russo brothers a chance to f@*k it up before you pilory them. You never know they might just sort out this mess we find ourselves in. The fact that Graham Taylor has aligned himself with them must mean there is some transparency and will for the club to do well on their part.

Good luck Tommy, please don't go to Reading!

I agree this is a sad loss, yet it is good bussiness by the club. If we get £1.8mill for a 29yr old with 1 year left on his contract then so be it. Mooney, Robbo, Helguson, Marlon, all WFC hero's who we were gutted to lose, but the club battled on and survived. The reality is we are a small club, who is well short of cash, operating in a tough economic climate. Look at the mess Soton are in, and Norwich & Charlton are now a league below us too since their falls from recent Premiership grace. We should support the Russo's whilst they & the board try to stabilise this club, and support Malky & Co on the pitch. Good luck Smithy, but WFC must move on.

It appears that the majority believe in grabbing the money and run.Don't they realise that almost every club is in debt but it is no ambition to sell "the family silver" that is the way to still end up skint and without any assets. When Simpson took over the Club I said on this website that people should not think that he was a philanthropist, that he was probably in it for the money. AND I have been proved right.I am even suspicious about the present crowd, including the great GT,that they want to get their snouts in the trough.I sincerely hope this time I am wrong. Also on this site I queried if MM will decide who comes in and who goes out, thinking that the answer was NO. Once more I believe I was right,or does MM not rate TS or O'Toole? and no whingeing about "we need the money" We also need the players. Re all those fools who continue to berate the Reading manager with their infantile insults of "judas" It looks increasingly that he was a shrewd judge in skipping ship from Watford,in getting job security and knowing Reading players would not be sold without his ok.But of course his critics would continue to retain their present jobs even if a far better opportunity was offered. Why get upset if all of you don't rate him as a manager? He will prove all of you wrong by being a Premiere Div manager within 5 years Forget your bias, just hope MM will do as well!!!
