Huddersfield Town striker Theo Robinson says he 'never got a chance' at Watford

Former Watford front man Theo Robinson believes he was never given the chance he deserved at Vicarage Road, writes Adam Newson.

The 20-year-old, who moved to Huddersfield Town for around £275,000 last week, never enjoyed a sustained run of games for the first team and spent most of his time out on loan.

Speaking to the Huddersfield Examiner, he said: "Personally, I believe I am good enough to play in the Championship but I never got the chance I thought I should have at Watford.

"Huddersfield is a big club with a genuine ambition to play in that division, which is where I want to be.

"I want to play regularly and I believe that the club can progress to the Championship, which is something I want to be a part of.”

Robinson claims having former Watford team mate Lionel Ainsworth at the Galpharm Stadium influenced his decision to join Huddersfield.

"Having players like Lionel Ainsworth around has influenced my decision to come here very strongly, because I have played with them and I know the quality they possess,” he said.

“Playing in League One last season opened my eyes to the quality of the division a little bit and I enjoyed scoring the goals I did.”

The striker signed for Huddersfield after a proposed move to Swindon Town broke down. Swindon had a deal in place with Watford to sign the Birmingham-born forward but negotiations stalled.

Last week, angry Swindon chairman Andrew Fitton told the Swindon Advertiser: “We agreed a deal with the club and player but there are shenanigans going on that we have warned certain people about. This is a classic example of agents and greed."

After spending a successful 2007/08 campaign in League Two with Hereford Town, Robinson returned the next season to Watford but found first team opportunities limited and went out on loan again in January, this time to League One-side Southend United.

After scoring seven goals in 21 games, the Shrimpers were keen to make the deal permanent but Southend were unable to meet Watford's asking price.

Speaking to the Southend Echo, Robinson said: "When my loan spell ended I really did think I was going to be coming back to Southend.

"I had really enjoyed my time there on loan and had got on well with the lads and management there but Watford put quite a big price tag on my head and Southend didn't have enough funds to sign me."

He may well have been unlucky not to get a chance having had successful loan spells. Because Boothroyd put so many players on the books something like this was bound to happen.

He looks like a natural goalscorer to me.
This mistake will certainly cost us dear.

Strange as it may seem better young players than Theo were never really given a fair chance under Gt but in those days we had a wonderful strike force...when Theo was around we had Liam Henderson as well, and if push came to shove I would opt for liam...but best of luck Theo and give of your best

Why are the majority of stories on this site cribbed from other papers/websites? Are all the Wobby's staff on holiday or have WFC stopped talking to them again?

No, Theo, you never did get a real chance. Mr Boothroyd thought that Ellington, Kabba and Collins John were better than you!!!

He could be a "big" money signing for a major club in the near future...we will have missed out once again..good luck Theo.

A player with great potential, but will he reach it? Was there a percentage of any sell-on fee clause in his contract? He was at the club at the wrong time, in so far as there were too many ahead of him in the queue - King, Ellington, D.Henderson, Priskin, Hoskins, Smith. The club was also unstable and he was probably better off at Hereford and Southend in terms of his development than he would have been if he had languished in the reserves with us.

Of course he could turn out to be a player that finds his level below the Championship, where he could regularly net 20 odd goals a season, but not break through at a higher level - only time will tell. Anyway good luck to him. He is probably right in so far as he never got a chance at WFC, but was he really ready to be given that chance?

yet again it's Boothroyd getting the blame. Who stopped Rodgers playing him? Malkay didn't have to let him go either if he thought he'd be any good for us! Good luck to him, however, I think League 1 is about his level.
