  • "If TS goes, I hope we get a fair price, but you need a team wanting to buy him and at the moment we have had only two bids, which to date have gone no where. Frankly when we re-signed him I was a little underwhelmed - he was not an established big championship or a premiership player. He did ok in premiership, but not good enough for any club like a Hull or Burnley to repeat our decision in buying him when they got into Prem. I think Boothroyd bought him for the same reason he tried to get Robbo, hoped to build on Watford loyalties plus he new hardly anything about the players market. Look at good operators in the transfer market like Coppell, talented players at value prices. TS is not the best Watford player of the last 12 years. Alan Neilson, Ashley Young, Heidar Helgusson, Tommy Mooney, Robert Page, etc all have equal or better claims. If TS goes it will not mean the end of the season, but it will emphasise the need for WFC to improve player recruitment and raise more matchday income by improving the stadium. The new regime know that, and they know it will take time. Ultimately unless you can guarantee a few seasons in the premiership you have to operate on Championship TV money and the criowds you can attract, unless you have someone prepared to indulge their interest by subsidising the club. Twice in the last 10 years the club has gambled stability and slow continuous improvement in favour of speculative investment in players wages and huge back room staff. As a season ticket holder since 1976, anyone who thinks we are anything more than a top 30/40 club with the prospect of a tilt at promotion every now and then, needs to get out more"

Malky Mackay discusses Tommy Smith, Tamas Priskin, Danny Graham and Doncaster Rovers

Mackay wants to lock Tommy Smith away for three weeks Mackay wants to lock Tommy Smith away for three weeks

Malky Mackay claims no Watford player will be leaving unless the club believes their valuation has been met.

Tamas Priskin was sold to Ipswich last week due to the striker being in the last year of his contract and supporters are now becoming anxious over the future of Tommy Smith, who is also in the final year of his current deal.

Smith has already been the subject of a successful £1.8m bid from Sheffield United and a rejected £750,000 offer from Reading.

But Mackay has assured fans Smith will remain a Watford player unless somebody makes the right offer.

The Hornets’ boss said: “Tommy Smith situation is he has played 90 minutes and right now he is our player, that is Tommy’s situation.

“I have openly stated he is one of the best players in the division and I would love to have him as long as I can have him.

“If anyone makes a bid for any of the players then you have to look at that on its own merit but it has to be a figure which is worth it to the football club so it can go on and until such times, there will be nobody leaving the football club.

“These things are done on their individual merits and right now Tommy is still in the starting XI and I am delighted that is the case.

“I said yesterday [Friday] that I want to lock him up somewhere for the next three weeks but he goes in and puts in another quality performance today [Saturday].”

Mackay was speaking during his post-match press conference following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Doncaster Rovers.
