Watford in discussions with QPR over extending Heidar Helguson's stay at Vicarage Road

Malky Mackay has confirmed Watford are in discussions with QPR over extending the loan spell of Heidar Helguson.

The Hornets tied up a deal for Tom Cleverley last week and Mackay confirmed on Saturday that the club’s recruitment department are in “ongoing discussions” with Manchester United, Arsenal and QPR over prolonging the stay of Craig Cathcart, Henri Lansbury and Helguson.

The striker’s five goals in four appearances has increased his legendary status at the club where he scored 64 goals during his initial five-and-a-half years spell.

But despite there being no loan fee involved when he rejoined the club in September and QPR paying half of the 32-year-old’s wages, there are still doubts as to whether the club can afford to pay his wages for the rest of the season, following the release of Watford Leisure Plc’s annual results two weeks ago - where it was stated a £6.5m hole needed to be filled before June 2010.

However, when asked about the club’s attempts to extend Helguson’s loan following the 3-0 victory over Scunthorpe United, Mackay said: “In all our loans, discussions are ongoing with their clubs at the moment and I have nothing else to say at the moment.

“It is something we would have to talk to his club about. Heidar has come back in and he has hit the ground running in terms of the way he adapts to our team and adapts to a different environment, but he is an international footballer so I wouldn't expect anything less from him. That is why we wanted to get him in the first place.”

A first-half double from Helguson and Danny Graham’s first goal in eight matches meant Watford cruised to a 3-0 win over Scunthorpe to climb up to eighth place.

“We scored three goals, kept a clean sheet and got three points so it certainly was very pleasing,” Mackay said..

“I think coming back after a two week international break you always hope you have done the right thing in terms of the time you give them off, the training, the fitness work you do and just the boys being away from each other for a couple of days.

“So to come back and to win a game like that and to end up with a performance like that, I was very pleased, with the clean sheet especially.”

How anyone gets excited about the prospect of keeping footballers that do not belong to us amazes me!

How you've managed to find a negative spin on us potentially keeping a club legend, who has scored five goals in 2.5 matches since his return to Vicarage Road amazes me.

VoR: What is this word 'belong' you refer to? In the modern day of agents and ludicrous incentives to leave clubs, a player doesn't really belong with one year or less of his contract to run. Personally, if they are good enough to keep us up (and maybe even push for the heady heights) I couldn't care less who they 'belong' to. Play with pride for the shirt, care about what you do, and it matters not if you are a youth player, a loanee or a seasoned pro we 'own'.

Come on!

Because I would rather watch Watford win with Helguson's goals than watch us lose when Ellington shoots 15 yards high and wide.

Mike Williamson showed us that no-one 'belongs' to any club.

Þessi fréttir er frábært!

To have one of our football players in a team where he can mark goals and play in a regular manner is good for both Ísland and for Watford. I do not see why QPR can not have him in the team but if he is succeeding in Watford team this is very good. Why Heiðar is doing well at Watford and not so good in other places I do not know, but I feel happy he is.

I am sure I read some time back that QPR were monitoring Ellington, to me it would make good business sense to swap Helguson for Ellington, Helguson possibly in his last 1 or 2 seasons at this level and Ellington out of contract in the summer and couldn't hit a barn door, as well as the need to get him off the payroll. I should be an agent me thinks. Watch this space ;o)

Hope it does!

At the moment it seems we will only have the funds available to build our "own" side by getting promotion. So let us enjoy the good football and support the current side. Ashcroft and JR should be working harder to put money into the club.

my view on this is as the first of two matches I will get to see is against QPR I will only get the chance to see him in 50% of the matches that is half of the matches one in two of them. To be honest if he plays in the second match that will be great. Lets hope we can keep him as he brings confidence to the rest of the team. One point off the play offs is an excellent performance by everyone at the club in such difficult financial times.

Fair enough Only 2, and I am not wound up, as the issue of loans is relevant with our team at the moment. The fact is that even our own players are on contracts, usually no longer than 3 years. A loan is just a shorter contract. Sure we don't benefit from a transfer fee when they leave, but since Bosman this can also be true of players who's contracts we hold. However we can also terminate the loan when it doesn't work out. The key point is we are in no position to gamble right now. The even more important point is that these lads want to play for us and are a credit to our club, including the style and manner of their play, for which MM must take plaudits. Compare this to us under 'big budget' Hoofroyd. Either way, I am delighted and just a little amazed how well our boys are doing. Couldn't care less if they are on loan, you know Heidar will give it his all for us. Who would you rather be your friend, H or Marlon?

I don't think it matters one bit that we have 4 loan players. Take Cleverley for example, if he was a product of Watfords youth system & was putting in performances like he is he'd be snapped up by a Premiership club at the end of the season anyway. Ok it's slightly different as we won't get a transfer fee. But, if any loan signing plays for Watford with pride then I am happy. Let's use them & enjoy watching them whilst they are here. Once he has gone I am sure Sir Alex will loan us others.

I was dead against bringing HH back, but he has proved me wrong. He and QPR obviously don't see eye to eye, and he seems happy at Vicarage Road, so keeping him till the end of the season would seem to suit everybody.

Once we are safe from relegation and we know where we stand for next season then the board and Malky can have a big chin wag to see where we go from there. You never know, by the end of the season somebody could have put some funds into the club.

Interesting that Lansbury is out of contract at the end of the season. Now he is an Under 21 his value will have gone up and so will his wage demands. Even though he is out of contract Arsenal can still get a fee for him and that could be a stumbling block. It could be that Malky has done too good a job on bringing him through.

Malky has shown a lot of wisdom and talent in his role as manager and we now have to hope he will not be snapped up in the summer! Maybe the club might not be able to afford to say no.

arsenal only get a fee if he is offered a new contract and he does not sign. if they do not offer one and release him he is free.

Yes, but can you see them not offering him a contract, with the way he has progressed this season? I can see him saying he wants first-team football, but Arsenal will not want to see him go for nowt.

Hopefully we can keep him (out of contract next summer?)

Sign him up. If we can secure all these loan players and possibly add another defender, then there is no reason we cannot finish in the top ten and who knows in and around the play offs.

OK, so money's a bit tight at the club. If H is on 18K a week, then hands up those of you who would pay a couple of quid a week to keep him? Bet there are 9,000 of people who were on Saturday who'd pay!
