Watford must wait for new signings with Arsenal midfielder Henri Lansbury linked

Malky Mackay says Watford are currently unable to bring in any new signings as they are waiting on other clubs but the manager confirmed he would like to bring Henri Lansbury back to Vicarage Road.

The Hornets are keen to strengthen in a number of positions this summer, in particular up front and at left-back.

The Watford Observer understands the club have targeted an experienced left-back but face stiff competition from a Championship rival for his signature.

Mackay explained the lack of new arrivals currently is a common problem and added several clubs Watford are in discussions with have still not made a decision whether to let the players leave.

"There is nothing at the moment that is ready to happen," Mackay said.

"We have a lot of things going on but I suppose, like everyone, we have a lot of things where you are awaiting decisions from clubs on their players and there are certainly a list of players you would like to get but you are in competition with other clubs for these players.

"There are lots of clubs abroad at the moment that haven't decided what they are going to do with their guys and haven’t got players in.

"It is like last year, where we didn't get Tom Cleverley, Henri Lansbury and Heidar Helguson in until around September and it is a problem but it is the way it is. You have to understand their point of view as well.

"There are a lot of players in that situation."

Arsenal youngster Lansbury spent most of last season on loan at Watford and Mackay has made no secret of his desire for the England Under-21 international to return.

Lansbury scored for Arsenal on Wednesday night and Mackay stated he is another player whose immediate future is unclear.

"Henri falls into that category. He is back at his club and they haven't decided Henri's immediate future," the Hornets boss said.

"Henri was here and was a great addition to the group and I think he benefited massively from being here – he was an England Under-21 international when he left here.

"He is someone that I spoke to at the end of the season and I think he would benefit from coming back to us for another six months but, again, it is one where it is someone else's player and there are a number of factors before it is decided whether he will be going back out on loan again."

Watford have been linked with a number of strikers recently but we understand rumours of Newcastle United's Nile Ranger joining the club on loan are wide of the mark.

However, we understand the Hornets are still considering an approach for Walsall's Player of the Year Troy Deeney, who scored 14 goals last season.

French forward Mana Dembele, who plays for Ligue 2 side LB Chateauroux, has been on trial at the club this week and played in Wednesday night's 1-0 defeat to Barnet.

The 21-year-old was one of four trialists at the club this week. Mackay said the club had not made a decision on their futures following Wednesday's match but we understand none of the quartet – one of whom is 17-year-old Danish defender Niklas Vemmelund – will be offered contracts at Vicarage Road.

Manchester City defender Ryan McGiven, who was on loan at Leicester City last season, has also been linked with the club, as has Spanish midfielder Jonatan Valle. But reports of a possible move are false and the club have no interest in either player.

wouldn't mind Lansbury coming back at all.

Sorry to change the subject but I cannot contain my rage at Judas' words about leaving us. To quote:

"From today I have become the biggest supporter of Swansea City," Rodgers told BBC Sport Wales.

"I was given a manager's job at 35 years of age, at a club I wanted to be at for longer than I was.

"But there was some restrictions and some things that happened inside Watford that became difficult for me, but it was a club I loved. "

Why do we dily dally around, now the left back who was due to sign by today has attracted interest elsewhere !

SMP, dream on!

I spoke to Cleverley and his Dad after the last home game of the season and they said no disrespect to Watford, he's loved his time here but he will not be coming back next season.

He will be loaned out to a Premierleague club or a club who are fighting for promotion in the Championship

GET HIM BACK NOW!
Seriously though having him back would be a real boost, he was brilliant last season.
Do we really need a left back? Or rather is it a priority at the moment? Ship off Severin and Henderson on loan and that we be the last of the dead wood. We then need an experienced striker who can get 10-15 goals in the league nxt season as well as an experienced defender. Got to mix a bit of age and experience in with youthful exuberance!

TC's availability was on Sky Thursday afternoon. Assume MM will have been in contact with Sir A and advised of situation before it got on Sky. Optimistic that if TC is not available to us Sir A may offer one of his other youngsters.

I dont think that TC will be back next year. It wouldnt be the best for his career. But, as he did do well, and has been playing the Man U side in the pre-season friendlies (and scoring), I am sure a few of his fellow fringe team mates would be itching at the chance to prove themselves at a club where their team mate has excelled.

I am optimistic that something will turn out good for our club. I am confident that we are going to stay up this season.

Who knows who we will sign on loan. I am sure the club have it in hand. I hope HH makes a return! He could be out 10 - 15 goal man.

Think this also could be a big season for WB. He looks impressive, still a long way to go for him, needs to get on the weights.

DB - I predict he will play a bigger part this season.

A true supporter, even when they have made a decision for whatever reason to not renew their season ticket "I AM HAPPY, I HAVE NO STRESS, I DON'T CARE WHO THEY SIGN OR DON'T! " would still care how "their" club does and who they sign. I was a season ticket holder for many years then stopped when we started a family and am back now as a season ticket holder again. But the whole time I was not a season ticket holder and only coming to ocassional games I never stopped checking on who we had signed, how we were doing, I was pleased when we did well and concerned when we struggled and that will never change no matter how bad things get. I think that is the difference and why your comments have raised such a strong response. A true supporter would never say they didn't care even if they no longer came to any matches.

So back on topic I do care about the state the club is in, I do think we need some decent experience signings and hope the Elton money is used to that end soon, I understand there are a number of clubs in the same position and worse and we have to tighten the belt but seriously a couple of first team signings and loans can change it all to positives, look at what Blackpool achieved on a shoe string budget, now they have lots more money than us, as my gran used to say you need to speculate to accumalate, I just hope we are not too driven by balancing books rather than giving service for money to every fan especially the ones who put their money where their mouth is in support. I would also point out that the England squad did not achieve in the WC due to not being as proud to wear the shirt and we have a bunch of youngster that do seem proud to wear the Watford shirt and as long as they give their all on the pitch then I support them 100%. I also hear Priskin is lined up for a new club please not back here he was a 70% if that we need to go forward not backward!

Rick Almighty says...
11:41am Sat 24 Jul 10

Given the comments made by Mackay, it would appear that the only signings lined up are loan signings - the Elton John money is there, so why are the club so reluctant to spend it?

Sell Loach for 2 million and use that money to bring in one or two experienced players in key positions. If that means deviating from the clubs wage structure in the short term, so be it.

At the moment, this team is a league 1 team with only a spattering of championship players, yet the club are charging fans championship prices. It is a ripp off.

The board have a duty to run the club responsibly, but the current Soviet style austerity, imposed by the dictatorship of Taylor, Timperley and Winter, is hindering any chance of success on the pitch.

Increasingly, it is a board comprising of small thinking old men clinging onto power; there has been no concerted attempt to find fresh investment, and the stated long term goals - to be a "top thirty club" - are a total cop out.

Of course, we all know Simpson was delusional when he spoke of Watford becoming a top ten premiership team; however, this club has been in the top two divisions for thirty years, at the very least we should be aiming to become a regular top six championship club.

No, the club has gone backwards under these small minded old men; Taylor himself is guilty of imposing a mind set rooted firmly thirty years in the past. What the club needs more than anything is robust leadership, vision and ambition. Taylor provides none of these qualities and he should duly step down. In truth, he has been usee by the board to become the acceptable face of the boards imposed austerity. If it were Jack Petchey, rather than Taylor, as chairman, there would have been uproar by now.

I live in St Albans, and you wouldn't know there is a championship club on your doorstep; you cannot even buy a Watford kit or any other club item in any of the local sports retailers. The men in charge have no vision, or ambition; they are content to run the club as a lower division basis. If we are not careful, that is exactly where we will find ourselves within a couple of seasons.

The defeat at Barnet on Wednesday demonstrated how weak the current squad is; we have a manager who at times last season was completely out of his depth.

Changes to the leadership structure of this club need to be made and quickly.

Tend to agree with most of your comments Rick, but last time I stated that GT was out of his depth as a forward-looking chairman a couple of weeks ago, I got totally slagged off by the happy clappers on this forum.
I know GT is a Watford legend, but that was as a manager, and also in his prime.
He is not suited at all to his current role, and he is backed by small-minded people with a similar approach, therefore we are going nowhere fast!
You will probably miss out on all of the slagging I received, because these are posts 50 and 51 of a string that will soon be out of date!
We will see if it provokes any more debate, because no WFC fan likes hearing derogatory statements about our beloved chairman.
He was a legend as a manager, but he is now completely out of his depth.

Rick I agree about the retailing of the club.Do we even have a retail marketing department? If we have we could make saving there as they seem to do **** all! As you say it's shocking the only place you can buy anything is at the club itself which isn't ideally placed for the Watford shopping trade! I know they shut the shop in the Harlequin as it wasn't "profitable" but surely we should be dealing with sports retailers in the local area! I know for a fact Plymouth Argyle have a shop in the city centre, you can even buy Yeovil Town shirts in the local sports shops! Missing a trick?? Small mindedness?? Lack of support from the local retail?? Who knows but in the days when kids can walk into any sports shop and pick up a Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea even Newcastle shirts we need to get ourselves out there into the local areas let people know we there alive and kicking and try and increase our revenue and even our fan base! Burrda seem to big in the middle east so why not try getting our name out there and into the mind of some major oil tycoon who's bored with a few billion to blow! A bit ambitious? A bit far out? Living in Lala land? Maybe but why not be ambitious, Sheffield United have done it in the far east, so clubs around us are doing it so why don't we? If it helps find this dream buyer we all pray for then it isn't a stupid as it sounds! We've got nothing to lose!

Rick Almighty says...
3:19pm Sat 24 Jul 10

Completely agree. Watford games are not even covered in the local papers in St Albans. The club needs to promote and raise its profile much more dramatically in the localities, i.e. St Albans, Hemel etc etc.

When Howard Wells was chief executive, the club began to sell its matchday programmes in Watford town centre on a Friday and by all accounts this scheme was a success. Why not at the very least get matchday programmes out to other local towns a day before matchday? Or fill up bus stops with posters and fixture lists?

It is this "small club" mentality promoted over and over by Taylor that prevents the club from exporting itself beyond its immediate locality.

We are the only Hertfordshire club in the championship, lets exploit that.

The 321 bus used to be adorned with the Watford logo - risky because it terminates at Luton - but again a simple idea that has the potential to market the club beyond the town itself.

No, i'm afraid we are starting to think small, and the people running the club are in a comfort zone. Let's not forget that in the last 12 years, we have been promoted twice to the premiership and reached 3 cup semi finals.

Not enough is being done to push the club forward, and covet fresh investment. And the lack of funding on the playing side will only produce a losing team, and who wants to come and watch that?

Snowylad says...
4:36pm Sat 24 Jul 10

As much as I agree with you I don't think GT can take the blame for that, it's been this way for a while. There are heads or marketing and heads of retail etc who should be held to task over this. There is a whole plethora of people who have a bigger input into these things than GT. He's admitted he's oThe only a figure head who's admitted to being out of his comfort zone, so the people who are supporting him should be stepping up!

Its not that somple just to get rid of Grahan Taylor and everything will be fine again.

They probably said that about the England national team too...

I think GT himself even admits he'd rather not be chairman or have very much to do with the club at all really (apart from a casual fan) but I don't see a rush of potential investments/chairman rushing to help out the club.

Probably doesn't say much for the other directors TBH...as businessmen they'd probably do a better job but presume they don't want the role?

The REAL people we need to try and get rid of in Simpson and Ashcroft aren't that bothered about selling their shares or whatever to somebody who does want to help the club out.

Didn't Arsenal have a store in St Albans which was closed down?

More fans there than Watford and it still didn't work clearly.

That does cost money in terms of rent etc...which would be better spend elsewhere.

Maybe we could ask M.Ashton for all the money he pocketed in his time here back..would be helpful.

Afterall the first sign of a club showing ambition is when they sign players that are fit/want to be playing and also building a new stand to encourage more fans and increased revenue..

I agree about poor facilities and ticket arrangements but then its hardly a surprise.

Most of those working there look like they've just come out of school and probably just doing it as a temp job.

Again Simpson and Ashton got rid of the main guy running the TO very well.

Rookery Boy - I notice you've put the "tw*t" comment in a past tense.

How very true...certain people who have now left did leave the club in this mess sadly...without too much care it seems.

I've never said GT should go, infact it's good to know someone who bleeds yellow is having a say in what goes on. Times are tight and business is slow and they are trying to do the right thing by balancing the books but I do thing there is a narrow mindedness in not making the club more visable. I don't know about the Arsenal shop in St.Albans but I know for them it's no great shakes as I can buy an Arsenal shirt, scarf mug etc from my local sports shop and I'm in Somerset! You can't buy a Watford shirt outside of Vicarage Rd. I'm not saying we should paint the world yellow and black and attempt global domination but the surrounding areas should be a Hornet hotbed.

You hit the nail on the head with Mr Ashton, he definately had our pants down! Unfortunately we weren't as quick as Wycombe to spot it. But once bitten is twice shy and the club must ensure that's the last time a character such as him is given the freedom to do what he likes with our money! If that means mid table mediocrity and bottom half finishes for a couple of years while we turn the corner then I'll take that.

What's happend has happend and we can't do anything about it apart from learn from it and ensure we don't end up there again!

I know you weren't blaming GT personally..sorry.

Just think we need to look at other people/areas for our woes.

TBH You can get any of the big club kits all around in the country (and world)...its why they make so much money.

I agree its a shame the club cannot even make a shop work in its own town centre.
