Malky Mackay says Watford are currently unable to bring in any new signings as they are waiting on other clubs but the manager confirmed he would like to bring Henri Lansbury back to Vicarage Road.
The Hornets are keen to strengthen in a number of positions this summer, in particular up front and at left-back.
The Watford Observer understands the club have targeted an experienced left-back but face stiff competition from a Championship rival for his signature.
Mackay explained the lack of new arrivals currently is a common problem and added several clubs Watford are in discussions with have still not made a decision whether to let the players leave.
"There is nothing at the moment that is ready to happen," Mackay said.
"We have a lot of things going on but I suppose, like everyone, we have a lot of things where you are awaiting decisions from clubs on their players and there are certainly a list of players you would like to get but you are in competition with other clubs for these players.
"There are lots of clubs abroad at the moment that haven't decided what they are going to do with their guys and haven’t got players in.
"It is like last year, where we didn't get Tom Cleverley, Henri Lansbury and Heidar Helguson in until around September and it is a problem but it is the way it is. You have to understand their point of view as well.
"There are a lot of players in that situation."
Arsenal youngster Lansbury spent most of last season on loan at Watford and Mackay has made no secret of his desire for the England Under-21 international to return.
Lansbury scored for Arsenal on Wednesday night and Mackay stated he is another player whose immediate future is unclear.
"Henri falls into that category. He is back at his club and they haven't decided Henri's immediate future," the Hornets boss said.
"Henri was here and was a great addition to the group and I think he benefited massively from being here – he was an England Under-21 international when he left here.
"He is someone that I spoke to at the end of the season and I think he would benefit from coming back to us for another six months but, again, it is one where it is someone else's player and there are a number of factors before it is decided whether he will be going back out on loan again."
Watford have been linked with a number of strikers recently but we understand rumours of Newcastle United's Nile Ranger joining the club on loan are wide of the mark.
However, we understand the Hornets are still considering an approach for Walsall's Player of the Year Troy Deeney, who scored 14 goals last season.
French forward Mana Dembele, who plays for Ligue 2 side LB Chateauroux, has been on trial at the club this week and played in Wednesday night's 1-0 defeat to Barnet.
The 21-year-old was one of four trialists at the club this week. Mackay said the club had not made a decision on their futures following Wednesday's match but we understand none of the quartet – one of whom is 17-year-old Danish defender Niklas Vemmelund – will be offered contracts at Vicarage Road.
Manchester City defender Ryan McGiven, who was on loan at Leicester City last season, has also been linked with the club, as has Spanish midfielder Jonatan Valle. But reports of a possible move are false and the club have no interest in either player.

But, as he did do well, and has been playing the Man U side in the pre-season friendlies (and scoring), I am sure a few of his fellow fringe team mates would be itching at the chance to prove themselves at a club where their team mate has excelled.
SMP, dream on! I spoke to Cleverley and his Dad after the last home game of the season and they said no disrespect to Watford, he's loved his time here but he will not be coming back next season. He will be loaned out to a Premierleague club or a club who are fighting for promotion in the Championship

Thats it........get it out of your system. It's good therapy. The trouble is you like to pick on people because you are so frustrated with the stae of the club. Poor old Holly gave some good inside info on likely signings and the second it doesn't happen the knives are out and into her back! This site is for anyone who wants to go on it Mick! I will continue when I feel like it, but unlike you, I am not stressed out, crying, whining or any of the other little comments you feel you have to make. I AM HAPPY, I HAVE NO STRESS, I DON'T CARE WHO THEY SIGN OR DON'T! :)

In relation to my 19 years on the planet yes I am! Why should age come to play when talking about loyal support? I assure you that If I was older I wouldn't feel any different about watford so stop talking crap.

Matty, you are now showing your age by resorting to rude words! You have absolutely no idea how you will feel when you get older, you have no experience to base that on, just the fact that you are 19 and believe that you know everything anyway! I am surprised you have even gone to Uni, what could you possibly learn that you don't know already?

Its not that somple just to get rid of Grahan Taylor and everything will be fine again. They probably said that about the England national team too... I think GT himself even admits he'd rather not be chairman or have very much to do with the club at all really (apart from a casual fan) but I don't see a rush of potential investments/chairman rushing to help out the club. Probably doesn't say much for the other directors TBH...as businessmen they'd probably do a better job but presume they don't want the role? The REAL people we need to try and get rid of in Simpson and Ashcroft aren't that bothered about selling their shares or whatever to somebody who does want to help the club out. Didn't Arsenal have a store in St Albans which was closed down? More fans there than Watford and it still didn't work clearly. That does cost money in terms of rent etc...which would be better spend elsewhere. Maybe we could ask M.Ashton for all the money he pocketed in his time here back..would be helpful. Afterall the first sign of a club showing ambition is when they sign players that are fit/want to be playing and also building a new stand to encourage more fans and increased revenue.. I agree about poor facilities and ticket arrangements but then its hardly a surprise. Most of those working there look like they've just come out of school and probably just doing it as a temp job. Again Simpson and Ashton got rid of the main guy running the TO very well. Rookery Boy - I notice you've put the "tw*t" comment in a past tense. How very true...certain people who have now left did leave the club in this mess sadly...without too much care it seems.

You hit the nail on the head with Mr Ashton, he definately had our pants down! Unfortunately we weren't as quick as Wycombe to spot it. But once bitten is twice shy and the club must ensure that's the last time a character such as him is given the freedom to do what he likes with our money! If that means mid table mediocrity and bottom half finishes for a couple of years while we turn the corner then I'll take that. What's happend has happend and we can't do anything about it apart from learn from it and ensure we don't end up there again!

Sorry to change the subject but I cannot contain my rage at Judas' words about leaving us. To quote:
"From today I have become the biggest supporter of Swansea City," Rodgers told BBC Sport Wales.
"I was given a manager's job at 35 years of age, at a club I wanted to be at for longer than I was.
"But there was some restrictions and some things that happened inside Watford that became difficult for me, but it was a club I loved. "
